Year 4, Term 4 Curriculum Overview 2023
Term 4
Welcome to Term 4 of Year 4 at Trinity Beach State School. We are very happy to see so much excitement and positivity from the school community in the first weeks after holidays.
The Year 4 teachers would like to extend our appreciation to families in their support of the our excursion to the waste management facility . We hope our students enjoyed these activities as much as we did.
It is very important for students to attend school every day. If your child is absent, please contact the office to let them know. Students must not attend school if they are unwell.
Just a reminder…No hat, no play! Please ensure your child has a drink bottle each day. Hydration = Happiness! Please also ensure that your child has appropriate stationary equipment for the day: a pencil, red pen, rubber, ruler and ruler are essentials that make it easier to be prideful of our schoolwork. Having adequate equipment helps children feel organised and in control of their work, it helps them avoid the stress of falling behind in a task.
To build a sense of belonging, pride and respect, students are expected to wear their full school uniform -
- No jumperswith hoods or jumpers that are not a dark blue
- No jewellery with exception to watches, medical alert bracelets or religious/ memorial references.
- No knee-high colourful socks (Black, blue, white only)
- School Hats to be worn.
Report Cards will be sent out in the last week of school. Please make sure your contact details are up to date
Awards Night
Trinity Beach State School will be hosting an award night on Thursday 9th of November from 6pm – 7:30pm (Week 6). Families of students who will be receiving an award will be invited to the Awards Night event over the coming weeks. This ceremony recognises the outstanding achievements of our students throughout their final year of primary school in all areas of academics, sport, the Arts as well as recognizing service to the local community.
English
Students read a narrative (The Twits) and examine and analyse the language features and techniques used by the author. They create an extra chapter based on a trick for the narrative for an audience of their peers. If you have time at home, watching a couple of episodes of Prank Patrol on ABC iview can help generate ideas for this unit.
Our school continues to embed a whole school approach to reading and spelling across Prep to Year 6. This involves teaching the reading and spelling demands of the Australian Curriculum, providing students with a systematic synthetic phonics approach and unpacking the Big 6/Science of Reading through engaging and meaningful lessons. Students engage with decodable texts when learning to read and rich authentic texts when reading to learn and continue to use the PLD approach for their spelling and sound focus.
Maths
Science
In the Plants in action unit students will develop a sense of wonder and appreciation of plants as they investigate the processes of pollination and germination, students sequence the life cycle of a bean. They consider a plant’s life cycle and environmental conditions that plants need for growth. Time to put them into work in the garden!

Music
Technology
Students create an interactive multimodal presentation using a “Makey Makey” (a basic computer) and block coding. Students will need to consider design elements both physical and digital to ensure the viewers of the poster are able to interact with it.
Drama
Freeze Frames
Students working in groups create, present and respond to a drama story that expresses their ideas and feelings about their special place in the school.
LOTE - Chinese
In this unit, students will use the Chinese language to explore the concept of school life in Chinese-speaking cultures and make connections with their own school experiences. They will engage with a range of texts and discuss about school experiences in Chinese. They will also analyse and understand the Chinese pronunciation and sentence structure.
IEC
English: Students will read a narrative. Then they will write a retell of the story ‘The Twits’, focusing on what happens at the beginning, middle and end, including their own images to retell the story. We will use a variety of ways to read, watch and explore this classic story by Roald Dahl.
Maths: Students will be partitioning collections to show one half, such as half of a shape or half of a group of objects. Students will also identify Australians coins, and money and will organise the money according to their value.
Year 4 IEC students are working on the school-wide spelling program called PLD. Our students get a list of words every fortnight for which they locate the spelling patterns and read stories that utilise the words. We are also working hard to implement computer literacy for our students. They can all use their own logins and work, weekly, in small groups to improve their typing.
