Year 5/6A Term 4 Curriculum Overview 2023
Term 4
Welcome to Term 4.
This term will be filled with moments, some ‘lasts’ for our year 6’s and for the year 5’s the final preparations to becoming Seniors! We have lots of wonderful opportunities to make memories this term including the High School Musical Performance, leadership applications, the Colour Run, Carols Night, Transition and Graduation. Our last 10weeks together is sure to fly by.
Whilst the end of the year can be draining, it’s important that we aim to keep up attendance and continue the brilliant momentum that everyone created throughout term 3. Please check in with your child in regard to what fresh consumables they need to succeed: whiteboard markers, books, pencils, rulers, erasers.
Our term 4 units are designed to engage learners in lots of rich discussion and hands-on/real world opportunities. I’ve already been blown away by their creativity and insights and can’t wait to share their work with you across the term. Please take a moment to read through the descriptions below to support you to engage and talk about our classwork at home. The assessment schedule for Term 4 is included in this outline (see table below) and provides insight into what your child is working on in class and the timeline of folio assessment tasks.
Awards Night
Trinity Beach State School will be hosting an award night on Thursday 9th of November from 6pm – 7:30pm (Week 6). Families of students who will be receiving an award will be invited to the Awards Night event over the coming weeks. This ceremony recognises the outstanding achievements of our students throughout their final year of primary school in all areas of academics, sport, the Arts as well as recognizing service to the local community.
Transition Day – Smithfield State High School
Our Year 6 students who have enrolled for Smithfield State High School in 2024 will spend the day at the high school on the 6th of December (Week 10). Students must be dropped to the front of SSHS in the morning at 8:30am and picked up in the afternoon at 2:30pm. On Transition Day, students will meet their new classes and some of their new teachers. They will learn how to find their way around the school, and the names and faces of people who can help them next year. They will also have some lessons introducing them to work they’ll do next year.
Students are to wear primary school uniform on Transition Day. Don’t forget to pack lunch, water bottles, hats and pens.
Year 6 Graduation Ceremony
Year 6 will have their Graduation Ceremony on Thursday 7th December at 9:30 am in the TBSS multipurpose hall. Parents and close family are invited to celebrate the conclusion of their child’s primary school education. During the ceremony as each student is called to the stage we display their Year 6 photo side by side with a photo from the beginning of their school journey. To do this we are asking families to provide a photo from either Kindy or Prep. Can you please send us your chosen photo as an email attachment or send a photo to school with your child to be scanned and then returned.
Year 5 & 6 Bring Your Own Device (BYOx) 2024 (For year 5 newsletter)
Next year all Year 6 classes will be BYOx classes. An email has been sent with details of the upcoming Technical Information session in Week 4. Onboarding sessions (opportunity to work with our technical staff to set up your child’s laptop) will occur the week before school starts in 2024.
English
Together students will read Colin Thiele’s novel “Storm Boy” (1963). They will analyse the authors style of writing, examining the impact of the authors choices of text structure and language features on the audience. Students will they watch the 2019 film adaption of ‘Storm Boy’ and compare the similarities and difference between narratives types. They will discuss and infer reasons for differences between the written and visual depictions of characters, settings and events, demonstrating understanding and justifying opinions about aspects of the novel and film. Students will need to respond to the view points of others and show an understanding of the differing perspectives of peers.
Maths
In maths this term we will be engaging all three stands of the curriculum through our units. | |
Year 5 - Plan a simple budget and perform financial calculations. | Year 6 - Interpret timetables. |
Science
It’s hands on and messy this term with students conducting a variety of experimental investigations as they explore the ‘Chemical Sciences’. Students will gain understanding of states of matter (solid, liquid, gas) and investigate the changes that occur as matter moves between states. They will also examine the differences between physical and chemical reversible and irreversible changes.
Our unit will culminate with a scientific report where students plan, conduct, document and evaluate a scientific investigation of their own design that examines a single variables impact on matter.
HASS
This term students will be gaining a real world understanding of Business and Economics as they plan a fundraising idea to support the schools Colour Run. They will be learning about the role of consumers, the influences of consumer choice, the challenge to balance needs, wants and resources as well as the trade-offs that both businesses and consumers make. Students will create and present an individual business proposal. The class will then work in small teams to bring a short-list of proposed ideas to life and reflect on the actual outcomes compared to their predicted outcomes. |
HPE
Students in year five will focus on applying strategies for working cooperatively and apply rules fairly during hockey-based activities and games.
Technology
This term in technology students will create product packaging to assist in the transportation of plants.
Visual Arts
This term in Visual Arts, year 5 students will continue to explore the seven elements of art. They will then use this knowledge to complete their very own art piece from different materials and mediums. This will communicate their ideas as an artist and make up part of their assessment task for Visual Arts this reporting period. Following this we will venture into the world of clay and make coils bowls to put in practise the Element of Form. Then it’s a wrap, our semester of art for 2023 will be complete. |
IEC
Welcome to Term 4, our final term at primary school for our year 6 students. This term brings lots of emotions including excitement, anxiety and uncertainty. All of these emotions are very normal for this time of year as students begin the transition to high school. Some of our IEC students have begun Transition sessions at Smithfield State High School each Tuesday. These Tuesday sessions will continue over the term until Week 9, in Week 10 there will be a Year 7 Transition Day at SSHS from 9am to 2:30pm. Students will spend the entire day at SSHS and parents will be required to drop off and pick up their child like a normal school day at the high school. Our focus for this term will be completing final assessments, transitioning to high school and making connections and lastly, graduation. We are looking forward to a wonderful last term in the IEC

Reading & Spelling
Our school continues to embed a whole school approach to reading and spelling across Prep to Year 6. This involves teaching the reading and spelling demands of the Australian Curriculum, providing students with a systematic synthetic phonics approach and unpacking the Big 6/Science of Reading through engaging and meaningful lessons. Students engage with decodable texts when learning to read and rich authentic texts when reading to learn and continue to use the PLD approach for their spelling and sound focus
Homework
This term, to support the wide and creative nature of the HASS and Science units, there will not be set weekly tasks. However, I strongly encourage students and families to continue to work on a variety of skills through real world experiences: - Handwriting: have students write the shopping list, write 3 gratitudes before bed, write and send a postcard to a family member. Often short, sharp practice is best. - Typing: students are using laptops in year 6 and year 7, be it a word document or www.typingclub.com all practice will benefit their skills. - Reading: All students (and adults!) benefit from developing regular reading habits, try to block off 20mins a night to read as a family. Try downloading the Bolinda Borrow Box app and listen to an audiobook as a family. |
