Term overview
Term Overview
We would like to welcome you and your child to what will be an exciting and successful partnership in Year 3/4 at Trinity Beach State School.
Our Math, Science, English and HASS programs will continue to follow the Australian Curriculum for Grade 3 and Grade 4. Term 1 is a 10-week term, finishing on the 31st of March.
Our specialist classes include 3 specialist lessons per week. Classes vary across the year level, but consist of a mixture of Health and Physical Education, Music, Drama and Technology.
The assessment schedule for Term 1 is included in this outline (see table below), this provides a good insight into what your child is working on in class and their assessment task. If you have any questions regarding this, please contact your child’s classroom teacher.

Our schools attendance target is 95%

Reading / Spelling
We are continuing our work with our Structured Synthetic Phonics approach implemented last year. This programs includes:
Reading: Students work in guided reading groups 4 days per week, at similar levels to develop skills of comprehension, fluency and vocabulary. Students are tested at the beginning of each term/end of the term to determine their progress and new guided reading groups.
Spelling: Students work in ability groups with different goals, 4 days per week, developing their spelling skills. Students are tested at the end of each term to determine their progress and new spelling words/groups.
English
Students write a persuasive letter to their teacher agreeing or disagreeing with the statement:
In English, students will be writing Traditional stories with a modern twist. Your child will be required to read, view, and interpret a variety of traditional stories. Students will learn how to plan, create, and retell traditional stories through explicit daily writing lessons. Spelling, Grammar and Reading comprehension strategies will also be covered in a variety of learning experiences thought the term.
Maths
In Mathematics, students will participate in a variety of engaging lessons, including group activities, hands-on experiments, and problem-solving tasks. In Number and Algebra, students will delve into fundamental mathematical operations, apply their place value understanding to partition, rearrange and regroup numbers to 10 000 and beyond. Students will explore the world of Measurement and Geometry, where they will learn to identify symmetry in the environment and match positions on maps with given information. Lastly, in Statistics and Probability, students will learn to interpret, compare data displays, and conduct simple investigations, to construct and display their data. |
Science
The Material World provides opportunities for students to develop an understanding of the properties of materials and how they relate to use. Through investigations, students explore how to test the properties of materials fairly and how to use this knowledge to choose materials wisely.
HASS
Over the end of Term 1 and the beginning of Term 2 students will explore the diversity of different groups within their local community, consider how personal identity is shaped by aspects of culture, and by the groups to which they belong. Examine the purpose of laws and distinguish between rules and laws. Make connections between world history events between the 1400s and the 1800s, and the history of Australia, including the reasons for the colonisation of Australia by the British. Investigate the experiences of British explorers, convicts, settlers and Australia’s first peoples, and the impact colonisation had on the lives of different groups of people. Analyse the experiences of contact between Australia’s first peoples and others, and the effects these interactions had on people and the environment. Draw conclusions about how the identities and sense of belonging for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the past and present were and continue to be affected by British colonisation and the enactment of law of terra nullius.
HPE
In PE, students in year three/four will apply strategies for working cooperatively and apply rules fairly during ultimate frisbee based activities/games. Students will refine fundamental movement skills (throwing and catching) and movement strategies (offensive and defensive) in a variety of ultimate frisbee game situations. In Health, students examine different sources of health information and how to interpret them with regard to accuracy. They identify health messages and the methods they use to influence decisions. Students apply decision-making skills to different health scenarios.
Drama
Freeze Frames Students work in small groups of 4–5 to create, present and respond to a freeze frame story around a given theme. |
IEC
In addition to supporting the children within the classroom in the IEC we are also establishing a positive classroom atmosphere.
Within our small groups (‘Social Skills’) we are revising the particular ‘focus skill’ each week and ensuring we all understand what the expectations are. We also have small groups in the IEC which focus on developing children’s fine and gross motor skills.
Every Friday afternoon we have our cooking group where we encourage the children to make/cook recipes. During our cooking sessions we encourage the children to do as much as they can independently, developing their self-care skills.
In their small groups the children are becoming responsible, resilient students and we all respect and support each other.
