Making Learning Visible – Enhancing English results for our students
This year we have embarked on a bold improvement journey to strengthen our student’s success within the English Learning Area. This approach is based on the evidence-based practices of Lyn Sharratt and her text ‘Clarity’. It allows our teachers to undertake a data responsive approach, support students with goal setting and assist students in self-reflecting on their work to identify their next steps in learning.
Our teachers have strongly embraced this approach, and while it is early days in our improvement journey, we are seeing an increase in student engagement and excitement about their learning. Since the beginning of Term 2, I have been walking through all of our classrooms to see the great work our students and staff are completing. Through the use of ‘I can’ statements our students are deeply emerged in the Australian Curriculum and can use the Making Learning Visible walls to assist them with their learning and goal setting. I would like to thank our teachers for their amazing work with our improvement focus!

Cross County Prep to Year 6 – Staying fit and active!
After what feels like an eternity of wet weather, our students have finally run the 2024 Cross County. Thank you to the families who attended to cheer on the students as they embraced the mud, wildlife and heat to complete their Cross County. Students from Years 4 to Year 6 who placed will now continue through to Trinity Coast North (TCN) trials.

P&C Association Contributions – Supporting our school to thrive!
Yet again our Trinity Beach State School P&C Association has made significant financial contributions to our school. Our Visual Arts programme has been granted over $6000 to further enhance the Visual Arts opportunities for our students which also supports our Visual Arts Show Case event in Term 4.

Instrumental Music has received close to $20,000 to purchase new instruments which allows our Instrumental Music programme to expand even further. Further musical instruments have been purchased also to support lunch time clubs with Mrs Ferguson our Guidance Officer.

New Soccer Goals for the Year 1 & 2 oval and replacement nets for all year levels to the value of over $4000 have been donated by our P&C Association. The students will love this! We encourage you to join pour P&C Association to work alongside our school for continual improvement.
Cultural Free Dress Day & Morning Tea – Celebrating our diversity
It was exciting to see the rich cultural diversity of our school community at our recent cultural free dress day and morning tea. We thank you for your efforts and contributions that enables our students to acknowledge our diversity and try a taste of different cuisines from across our world.

News from the Prep - Year 2 Deputy Principal

What a busy start to term 2 we have had!
Cross Country
Today the weather (mostly) held off and we were finally able to run our Junior Cross Country. What an exciting morning! Thank you to Ms Donovan for organising such a well run event, considering the changes we needed to make so that it could still go ahead in the soggy conditions. I absolutely love seeing the look of anticipation on all our students faces as they get ready to start and love cheering them all on as they run their own best race. Congratulations to all students in P-3 who participated today.
ANZAC Day service
Thank you to all those families who got up super early on ANZAC day to represent our school as well as those who represented other clubs and organisations like Scouts at the Trinity Beach Dawn Service. I have been lucky enough in my lifetime to attend many ANZAC dawn services in different locations and the Trinity Beach service is one of my favourites. Thank you to all our students who participated.
Huge acknowledgment also to our school leaders who did an exemplary job running our school service. I was very proud of the respect shown by all of our Trinity Beach State School students during this important event.
There is a lot of exciting learning happening in our P-2 classrooms for term 2. Keep your eye out for the year level overviews which will be sent out at the end of next week.
News from the Year 3 - 6 Deputy Principal

Welcome to Week 3.
Last week we commemorated ANZAC day with a very moving service at the school. I am always proud to see how our Year 6 school leaders conduct themselves when running these events. It is good to know that our leaders will move into high school able to speak articulately in front of an audience and not only participate, but run formal events with a sense of purpose and confidence.
There have been many exciting events happening across our sector. Despite the weather and boggy oval, cross country has finally been run. Students were able to share their culture through a shared morning tea on cultural day and last week our Year 6 students attended their annual trip to the Great Barrier Reef. Students are researching the health of the reef in order to complete their Science assessments. Despite the weather and swell, students enjoyed the day out of the classroom. This will be followed up by visits from the Yirrganydji traditional owners who are part of the Reef Cooperation Education team. Students will gain an understanding of the connection between the Yirrganydji people to the land and the sea.
Over the last couple of weeks, we have had a focus on our school rule ‘Being Respectful’. Our focus skill is ‘Following Instructions’. We have wonderful staff who put our students first and demonstrate respect. The senior school can be difficult to navigate for some of our students as the expectations to be a good role model become higher and students start looking towards high school. I like to encourage our students to do the right thing, even if no one is looking, and that kind and respectful words & actions cost nothing.
Class newsletters are being published this week. You will receive an email containing the link to our digital platform Schoolzine.

News from the Wellbeing, Engagement & Inclusion Deputy Principal

Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing Survey
In weeks 3 and 4 of this term, students in Years 4 and 5 will be asked to take part in the Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing (QEW) Survey.
We know that wellbeing and engagement are important parts of your child’s life at school. The QEW Survey is designed to measure how students view their wellbeing and engagement across different topics. The information we get from the survey helps us better understand and support our students.
An information letter was sent out to all year 4 and 5 parents and carers this week. If you do not wish for your child to participate in the QEW Survey, please contact the school by emailing Admin@trinitybeachss.eq.edu.au or call 40571444.
If you have any questions, please contact the school. More information, including FAQs, can be found on the Education website: (https://qed.qld.gov.au/publications/reports/statistics/schooling/students/queensland-engagement-wellbeing-survey

CyberSafety - Information for parents
To help keep your child safe when they are online, you can:
- put computers in open spaces within your home
- remind your child that content can be posted instantaneously, the downfall is that they can potentially post something without thinking about the ramifications.
- educate your child about appropriate online behaviour and the need for respectful communication with other internet users
- keep an eye on what your child is doing online (both in the home and on any mobile devices they may have access to e.g. phones, music devices and tablets)
- set clear rules about what sites and activities they are allowed to access
- install software to limit their use and monitor/restrict the sites they visit
- discuss a plan with your child about how to address any cybersafety issues that may arise (make sure they know you will be supportive if they mention anything and that they will not get in trouble)
- encourage them to find someone they feel safe talking to, such as yourself, a relative, a teacher or a trusted adult.
Access Online awareness: Information for parents and caregivers (PDF, 5 MB) which provides important information for parents about cybersafety and cyberbullying. It suggests what parents and caregivers could do if their child is the target of, or is responsible for, inappropriate online behaviour.
The Office of the eSafety Commissioner also provide a suite of resources, helping Australians to have safer, more positive experiences online. In particular, there is a parent page which provides advice for parents and carers, along with a blogposts page which currently contains information about staying safe online during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Through the Alannah & Madeline Foundation’s Digitalk resource, parents can also access resources developed to help children and young people, and the people who care for them to reduce their risk of exposure to online harm and empower them to successfully and safely navigate the digital world.

News from the Head of Inclusive Education

Welcome back to school for Term 2! It is wonderful to see so many settled, smiling children ready to engage and learn at school.
It may seem very early in the year to be thinking about 2025, however, now that we are into Term 2, school staff start to think about transition for all students, but particularly those who will be starting Prep or Year 7 in 2025.
Families and carers play a significant role in supporting their children's transition to school. Helping children to make the big move to Prep starts well before, and extends far beyond, their first day.

https://earlychildhood.qld.gov.au/earlyYears/Documents/transitions-info-families.pdf
https://earlychildhood.qld.gov.au/earlyYears/Documents/transitions-starting-school-brochure.pdf
The Autism Hub has some great resources to support transition which are useful for all children with or without additional needs. If you have a younger child starting Prep in 2025, you might like to have a look at the online transition resource below:

Families of students in Year 6 who will transition to Year 7 in 2025 will find the resource below very useful. It contains links to the Community Resource Unit (CRU) who offer workshops for parents and carers throughout the year and shows some samples that can be used to plan for transition.

While many resources note a specific disability, these are tools that can be used for any child with or without a disability. The aim of these resources is to reduce worry and anxiety for children and their families about starting school, or starting at a new school.
If you would like to learn more about transition and inclusion at our school or discuss reasonable adjustments for your child, please make a time to see me in the Inclusive Education Centre.

News from the Head of Department Curriculum Prep - Year 6

Welcome back to school! I hope you and your families had a restful and enjoyable Easter break and are feeling recharged and ready to start Term 2.
As we begin this new term, I want to extend a warm welcome to our returning students, as well as those who are joining us for the first time. We are thrilled to have you as part of our school community!
Our dedicated and experienced teachers are ready to guide and support your children through their education. We encourage you to reach out to them if you have any questions or concerns.

Please keep an eye out in the newsletters and on the school’s Facebook for information about upcoming programs and events.
Academic report cards will be sent home via email in week 10. Please ensure your contact details are up to date with admin.
News from the Guidance Officer

Guess what?? This week is Guidance Week!!
All across the state, Guidance Officers are being encouraged to let families know who they are and what they do in the school. For anyone who doesn't know me yet, my name is Jenny Ferguson, the students and staff call me Miss Jenny. My office is in the library and I work at Trinity Beach State School 5 days a week :)
The main parts of my role as a Guidance Officer are:
- Wellbeing support for identified students
- Cognitive Assessments and reporting to assist the identification of high level learning needs (and Intellectual Disability)
- Case Management of students with Complex needs
- Referrals for external supports for identified families / students
My role can be challenging but is also fulfilling, and being full time in one school means that I get to work closely with this amazing school team!!
Library Legends
Our school library has a brilliant group of students who volunteer their time a number of times per week. These students are in Year 4, 5 and 6 and very helpful to myself and the school staff who regularly supervise and use the library.
I have had a LARGE group of extra students show interest in helping out at the library as well, however we are not able to take on extra helpers at the moment. If your child has expressed interest to you at home, can you please let them know that we cannot take on extra helpers just yet??
During Term 3, we will have a Book Week event where we will be looking for additional volunteers. If your child would be interested in assisting at that time, we will be very happy to include them (especially students in Year 3 – 6).
Welcome message from the Defence School Mentor

I would like to formally introduce myself and give you a little background on me and why I chose to become a Defence School Mentor.
My name is Hayley Thomas.
I have recently relocated back to Cairns this year from Brisbane to be closer to my family. I have previously lived in Cairns from 2016-2020 and loved the lifestyle.
In 2020, I joined the Army where I served for 4 years. My experience in the Army was great and it made me want to continue doing something where I could still be a part of the Defence community.
The Defence School Mentor Program is excellent as it connects children with their school community and enhances the school’s ability to address the impacts of military lifestyle.
I look forward to meeting all the Defence Families and help welcome them to Trinity Beach State School and to the Cairns community!

Q Parents
To continue to streamline the school’s sale for all items – school fees, excursions, performances, instrumental music we are moving to a cashless school. This allows our school to reduce the time, effort and expenses required to collect and follow up payments from parents and students. When you receive an invoice payments can be made online via BPOINT or QParents.
We are proud of being a relatively-cashless school and thank you for moving online with us!
QParents
QP is an online portal helping the school move toward a cashless and paper friendly school.
- The QP portal allows Parents and Carers to grant participation consent online for activities such as swimming and excursions which reduces our need to print out paper consent forms
- Also, the QP portal enables Parents and Carers to make payment online for school activities and viewing unpaid invoices payment history.
Thank you to all those parents who have registered for QParents. This means every registered parent now has the opportunity to access to their children’s student records at their fingertips, anytime, anywhere. Haven’t received an invitation from us yet? There’s still time! Please let us know immediately. Or if you are simply looking for further information, videos and FAQs on QParents, visit https://qparents.qld.edu.au

Around the Classroom
Our talented Year 6 students delved into the world of data representation!
Armed with pencils, paper, and digital tools, they embarked on a journey to explore the art of displaying data on graphs. From classic bar graphs to innovative digital visualizations, they're honing their skills to present information in the most engaging and informative ways possible.
Whether it's handwritten charts or digital spreadsheets, our young minds are eager to learn and experiment with different methods of showcasing data. Who knows, we might have some future statisticians or data scientists among us!

Prep Montessori made traditional Australian damper for Cultural Day.

In our Friday IEC cooking class, they used fresh produce from the TBSS gardens to make sushi. In their sushi they used crumbed chicken, rice, carrot and fresh cucumber rolled up in seaweed paper called nori. They practised how to fill and roll the sushi and discovered how delicious the sushi tasted when it was finished.
