Year 1 Term 2 2024 Curriculum Overview
Term Overview
Welcome! Welcome back to Term 2, we hope you all had a restful holiday and students are ready to get back into learning! This term will be jam packed for both the teachers and students with different activities happening throughout the school. Semester one reports will be emailed in week 10 of this term. We would still appreciate your assistance in encouraging our students to maximise their independent skills. The expectation is that students should be able to enter the classroom in the morning by themselves, put their own lunch in the fridge, their own bag on the bag hooks and then get themselves ready for the day by going to the toilet, getting a drink, filling up their water bottle and sharpening their pencils before school starts. Year 1 Cultural Morning The Year 1 teachers would like to celebrate the diversity of the cultures across our year level. We will be holding a Cultural Day morning on the 13th June from 9:15am till 10:45am. There will be more information sent out inviting parents to assist/participate in the event. Late arrivals Our rolls need to be marked by 9:05am each morning, if you are arriving after 9:05am please ensure that you get a late slip for your child from the office as teachers are unable to change their roll once its marked. On mornings where students have specialist lessons, specialist teachers take the children at 9am and mark the roll at their lesson. Please be aware of these days and sign them in at the office if you are arriving late. Breakfast Club Breakfast is such an important meal in a child’s day, it provides your brain with fuel. Without breakfast children find it very had to concentrate. On a Monday, Wednesday and Friday, near the hall, from 8:15 till 8:45 we have some amazing volunteers who run a breakfast club for the students. No money required just a smiling face and your best manners. Before School We encourage parents to drop students off to school after 8:30am. If students arrive before this time, they are to sit in the COLA until the 8:30am bell. |

Great news: Trinity Beach SS provides our parent community with the opportunity to register for QParents.
We will be sending out invitations for parents to register for QParents next week.
QParents won’t replace the traditional ways you communicate with our school, but it will provide another way to communicate with us.

How to report an absence:
- Email attendance@trinitybeachss.eq.edu.au or
- Call the school's absence line on 4057 1444, then press #1 and don't forget to leave a reason why your child/children are away, or
- Send a note to the classroom teacher on their return

Reading / Spelling
We are continuing our work with our structured synthetic phonics approach implemented last year. This program includes:
Reading: Students work in guided reading groups 4 days per week, at similar levels to develop skills of comprehension, fluency and vocabulary. Students are tested at the beginning of each term/end of the term to determine their progress and new guided reading groups.
Spelling: Students work in ability groups with different goals, 4 days per week, developing their spelling skills. Students are tested at the end of each term to determine their progress and new spelling words/groups.
English
This term in English, we will be reading known fairy tale books and then changing one of the characters. Students will choose a character and change what that character looks like. They will then describe their new character and express their opinion about their changed character. At the end of the term they will present their character to the class. |
Maths
In math this term, children will continue to develop their understanding of counting patterns in 2s, 5s and 10s. We will investigate partitioning of two-digit numbers as well as identify and solve addition and subtraction problems. The children will explore the features of Australian coins and how to tell time to the hour. Assessment will be on the concepts of location and transformation and shape.

Science
Changes I can see
This unit provides opportunities for students to explore how and why changes occur in the daytime and night time sky and landscape, and develop students' ability to describe these changes in their local environment. Students will predict and observe if and how objects from the local environment might change over time. They will identify different types of weather and explore how the weather may affect what people do. Students will investigate the properties of natural, managed and constructed features can help predict if observable changes will occur. They will also explore the knowledge of daily and seasonal changes in weather patterns and landscape held by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
HASS
History - My Changing Life
This unit is a continuation from last term. Students will explore the following inquiry question - How has my family and daily life changed over time? In order to answer this question, students will investigate family structures and the roles of family members over time. They will identify and describe important dates and changes in their own lives. Students will compare aspects of their daily lives to aspects of daily life for people in their family in the past to identify similarities and differences. They will sequence and describe events of personal significance.
Homework
Reading homework will continue the same as term 1. Please try and read with your child at least 3 times a week..
HPE
In PE, students in year one will continue to develop the fundamental movement skills of dodging and running and test alternatives to evade others and objects in tagging games. They will also explore running, jumping and throwing activities and take part in simple challenges and competitions in athletics.

Music
In this unit, students will learn main rhythmical elements – Ta, Ti-ti, Za, Vah and Great Vah. They will explore sounds as they learn to listen to and make rhythmical patterns using a variety of percussion instruments. They will also learn to discriminate between long and short sounds and silence.
Visual Arts
This term, students in Year 1 will as learn different painting techniques with an array of materials. They will cut and assemble their artwork which will include a skilfully crafted foil mini beast. This is keeping with this year’s theme of ‘Bugs, Grubs and All Things Nice’. This will conclude our studies of Visual Arts for the students that have been participating this semester.
Drama
Toyworld
In this unit students will explore the world of toys through improvisation, movement and storytelling. They will base a character on their favourite toy and bring it to life!
Technology
Students will explore and identify digital systems (what they do and how to use them), to better understand how they are used to meet community needs.
IEC
Students in Year 1 have had a great start to Term 2.
Our whole school approach to reading means that Year 1 as students participate in guided reading lessons four times each week and success is evident in their reading and spelling.
