Year 3 Term 2, 2024 Curriculum Overview
Term overview
Welcome to term two, we hope you all had a safe and happy holiday and look forward to a very productive and successful 10-week term, ending Friday, 21st June. The following information will support you and your child’s continued journey throughout 2024. Our Maths, Science, English and HASS programs are aligned to the Australian Curriculum for Year three and the V9 English Curriculum will be implemented throughout 2024. We have specialist classes which will rotate and are provided by our specialist teachers, these are Music, HPE, Technology, Drama and Art. Organisation It is imperative that students are organised and that they have all equipment needed each day to be the best learners they can be. Students are required to be in class and unpacked by 8:50am so they are ready to start by 9am. An early bedtime routine (scientists recommend 10-11 hours’ sleep per night) and a healthy diet will assist your child in performing effectively at school. Hats and Shoes Broad-brimmed or bucket hats and shoes are compulsory at Trinity Beach State School, so please ensure your child always has these and that they are clearly named. Equipment & Materials Please check with your child regularly throughout the year to ensure they have everything they need for school, particularly consumables and easily misplaced items such as pencils, erasers, glue, rulers etc. Religious Instruction Religion classes will continue weekly on Mondays at 12.30pm. During this time, students who do not participate in Religious Instruction, will be doing a Values Lesson. Please contact the front office if you wish to change your child’s religious preference. Personal Items QLD Education Departmental guidelines stipulate that to help maintain hygiene regulations, all students are to avoid bringing personal items to school. These include toys and other items that may result in other students sharing contact with these. |

English
In this unit students will create an imaginative narrative based on the novel, Matty Forever by Elizabeth Fensham, using a range of structural and language features.
Students will listen to, read and view, the text and will be used by students as a model for constructing their own work.
Matty Forever uses language features including varied sentence structures, some unfamiliar vocabulary, a significant number of high-frequency words that can be decoded using phonic and morphemic knowledge, a variety of punctuation conventions, and illustrations and diagrams that support and extend the printed text.
Reading / spelling
We are continuing our work with our Structured Synthetic Phonics approach implemented last year. This programs includes:
Reading: Students work in guided reading groups 4 days per week, at similar levels to develop skills of comprehension, fluency and vocabulary. Students are tested at the beginning of each term/end of the term to determine their progress and new guided reading groups.
Spelling: Students work in ability groups with different goals, 4 days per week, developing their spelling skills. Students are tested at the end of each term to determine their progress and new spelling words/groups.
Maths
In this unit students apply a variety of mathematical concepts in real-life, lifelike and purely mathematical situations.
- Number and place value - Recognise the connection between addition and subtraction and solve problems using efficient strategies for multiplication. Count to and from 10 000. Recall addition and multiplication facts for single-digit numbers.
- Money and financial mathematics - count collections of coins and notes, make and match equivalent combinations, calculate change from simple transactions, solve a range of simple problems involving money.
Science
Heating Up (Physical Sciences) Students to investigate different heat sources and how heat moves from one object to another. Through hands-on activities, students investigate the difference in conductivity of materials. |
HASS
History – Celebrations and Commemorations Students will continue to investigate the events different people and groups celebrate and commemorate and how this impacts our communities, and significant events of the past. |
Homework
At Trinity Beach State School, regular Home Reading is a priority. Please check your child is bringing home up to two library books per week. Please read with them during the week. Children will also be encouraged to borrow books from our Library for enjoyment and relaxation.
HPE
In PE, students in year three will continue to develop the fundamental movement skills of dribbling, passing and shooting in the sport of basketball. They will also develop their technical understanding of athletic activities. They will learn how to set targets and improve their performance in a range of running, jumping and throwing activities.
Music
In this unit, students will appreciate and analyse the music of Mussorgsky. Through this, they will learn about dynamics, legato and staccato, tied notes and slurs. They will consolidate their knowledge of C-Pentatonic scale. They will learn about string instruments in an orchestra. Students will be introduced to the ABA musical form.
Visual Art
This term year 2 students will be experimenting with different visual art processes including mono printing with gel plates, water marbling and using the sun to print in a technique called cyanotype printing. We will be using leaves and different mediums to create our art works this term. |
Drama
This term students will develop improvisations based on sport and fitness activities.
They will sustain and build belief in roles and use drama elements to create theatre conventions like freeze frames and slow motion. Students will explore gestures and postures and how they relate to and reveal character.
IEC
In addition to supporting the children within the classroom in the IEC we are also establishing a positive classroom atmosphere.
Within our small groups (‘Social Skills’) we are revising the particular ‘focus skill’ each week and ensuring we all understand what the expectations are.
In their small groups the children are becoming responsible, resilient students and we all respect and support each other.
