Year 4 Term 2, 2024 Curriculum Overview
Term overview
We would like to thank you and your child for their efforts over the duration of last term and the beginning of Term 2. We have had a productive term and are looking forward to seeing more success in learning throughout Term 2.
Our Year 4 Teaching Team consist of Ms Amanda Cecil (4A), Ms Julie-Anne Kentish / Ms Ebony Hopkins (4B), Mr Rod O’Neill / Ebonee Dryden (4C), Ms Ariel Ballou / Ms Ebonee Dryden (4D), Mr Tim Cherry (4E). The best way to contact us is through email.
Our Math, Science, English and HASS programs will continue to follow the Australian Curriculum for Grade 4. Term 2 is a 10 week term.
Our specialist classes include 3 specialist lessons per week. Classes vary across the year level but this term consist of a mixture of Health and Physical Education, Music and Technology.
The assessment schedule for Term 2 provides a good insight into what your child is working on in class and their assessment task. If you have any questions regarding this, please contact your child’s classroom teacher.
Report Cards will be sent out in the last week of school. Please make sure your contact details are up to date.
Attendance
Before School
We encourage parents to drop students off to school after 8:30am. If students arrive before this time, they are to sit in the COLA until the 8:30am bell.
How to report an absence:
- Email attendance@trinitybeachss.eq.edu.au or
- Call the school's absence line on 4057 1444, then press #1 and don't forget to leave a reason why your child/children are away, or
- Send a note to the classroom teacher on their return
Our schools attendance target is 95%

Reading / Spelling
We are continuing our work with our Structured Synthetic Phonics approach implemented last year. This programs includes:
Reading: Students work in guided reading groups 4 days per week, at similar levels to develop skills of comprehension, fluency and vocabulary. Students are tested at the beginning of each term/end of the term to determine their progress and new guided reading groups.
Spelling: Students work in ability groups with different goals, 4 days per week, developing their spelling skills. Students are tested at the end of each term to determine their progress and new spelling words/groups.
English
In this unit, students engage with a variety of poems.
They listen to, read, view and interpret spoken, written and multimodal poems.
These poems use language features including varied sentence structures, some unfamiliar vocabulary that may include English words derived from other languages, a significant number of high-frequency words, words that need to be decoded using phonic and morphemic knowledge, a variety of punctuation conventions, and illustrations and diagrams that support and extend the printed text.
Students will analyse the poems to find the message/purpose behind each of the poems and interpret the language features used within the poem.
Maths
In Maths, students started the term by studying the properties of odd and even numbers. They are moving onto learning about measuring length, area, temperature and capacity. Finally, we will look at symmetry and tessellation. Students will also be practising their multiplication facts up to multiplying by 10.
Science
In Science, students are learning about and investigate contact and non-contact forces. This includes a focus on both gravity and friction. For the assessment, students will analyse the forces in a "Minute to win it" style game .
HASS
In HASS (History and Social Studies), students will consider a law to change. They will need to present arguments that consider all points of view. They will also explore who they are as a person and member of society through the creation of an ‘All About Me’ poster.
HPE
In PE, students in year four will continue to practise and refine fundamental movement skills to perform various skipping skills and solve individual skipping challenges. They will also develop their technical understanding of athletic activities. They will learn how to set targets and improve their performance in a range of running, jumping and throwing activities. |
Technology
Students continue to explore and develop an understanding of more complex algorithms that incorporate sequencing, comparison operators (branching) and iteration (repetition of instructions).
Music
In this unit, students will learn about rondo form. They will be introduced to a semiquaver rest and how anacrusis is used in songs. They will consolidate their knowledge of compound time, accents on strong beats in a bar and knowledge of notes on the staff. Students will learn correct conducting technique for different time signatures.
Drama
Students will develop a character through individual and group exploration, dramatic improvisation and response. They plan a character backstory and change the way they walk, talk and move. At the end of the term students participate in an improvised interview, in character, in front of their class.
LOTE - Chinese
In this unit, students will use the Chinese language to explore the concept of school life in Chinese-speaking cultures and make connections with their own school experiences. They will engage with a range of texts and discuss about school experiences in Chinese. They will also analyse and understand the Chinese pronunciation and sentence structure.
IEC
English:
In this unit, students engage with a variety of poems.
They listen to, read, view and interpret spoken, written and multimodal poems.
Students will describe how similar topics and information are presented through the structure of an information text and a poem and identify their language features and visual features.
Maths:
In Maths, students who have an ICP at Year Level 1started the term by studying the adding and subtracting using different counting strategies.
Students who have an ICP at Year Level 2 are Counting, multiplying and dividing. The students will be representing multiplication by grouping into sets and arrays. The students will divide collections and shapes into halves, quarters and eighths. The students will also order three-digit numbers.
They are moving onto learning about measuring length, area, temperature and capacity. Finally, we will look at symmetry and tessellation.
In Week 3, the IEC students will be bringing to school $5 to spend in our Tuckshop. The students will have looked at the tuckshop menu prior to our visit and they can decide what they can buy for $5 and how much change they will have left.
