Year 3/4 Term 2 2024 Curriculum Overview
Term overview
Welcome to Term 2! It's with great pleasure that we welcome you back to another chapter of our educational journey together. As we step into this new term, let's embrace the opportunities for learning, growth, and collaboration that await us. We're grateful for your ongoing support and partnership in your child's education, and we're committed to making this term a memorable and enriching one for everyone involved.
Organisation
It is imperative that students are organised and that they have all equipment needed each day to be the best learners they can be. Students are required to be in class and unpacked by 8:55am so they are ready to start by 9am. An early bedtime routine (scientists recommend 10-11 hours’ sleep per night) and a healthy diet will assist your child in performing fully while at school.
Equipment & Materials
Please check with your child regularly throughout the year to ensure they have everything they need for school, particularly consumables and easily misplaced items such as pencils, erasers, glue, rulers etc.
Attendance
Before School
We encourage parents to drop students off to school after 8:30am. If students arrive before this time, they are to sit in the COLA until the 8:30am bell.
How to report an absence:
- Email attendance@trinitybeachss.eq.edu.au or
- Call the school's absence line on 4057 1444, then press #1 and don't forget to leave a reason why your child/children are away, or
- Send a note to the classroom teacher on their return
Our schools attendance target is 95%

Reading / Spelling
We are continuing our work with our Structured Synthetic Phonics approach implemented last year. This programs includes:
Reading: Students work in guided reading groups 4 days per week, at similar levels to develop skills of comprehension, fluency and vocabulary. Students are tested at the beginning of each term/end of the term to determine their progress and new guided reading groups.
Spelling: Students work in ability groups with different goals, 4 days per week, developing their spelling skills. Students are tested at the end of each term to determine their progress and new spelling words/groups.
English
In English, our focus for this term is persuasive writing. Through various writing exercises and discussions, students will learn the art of persuasion, improving their skills to effectively communicate their thoughts and opinions and students will have the opportunity to create a letter to persuade their parents to explain their point of view of whether the city or country is a better place to live. They will delve into analysing persuasive texts, creating their own arguments, and presenting them convincingly, preparing them for real-world applications of their writing skills.
Maths
In Term 2, students will explore Patterns and Algebra. They will explore the fundamental connections between addition and subtraction, recognizing how these operations are interrelated. Through engaging activities, students will learn to classify numbers as odd or even, developing a deeper understanding of number properties. Additionally, they will master addition facts for single-digit numbers, laying a solid foundation for more complex mathematical concepts. Furthermore, students will embark on a journey of discovery as they continue to explore number patterns involving both addition and subtraction, fostering their analytical and problem-solving skills. Moreover, they will identify and explain strategies for finding unknown quantities in number sentences, equipping them with essential problem-solving tools. Lastly, students will describe number patterns resulting from multiplication, enhancing their ability to recognize and analyse patterns in numerical data. Through hands-on exploration and guided instruction, students will develop a strong mathematical foundation and a passion for learning in our Patterns and Algebra unit. |
Science
This term, students in 3/4A will study the unit Forces. Term 2 will allow our students to learn through hands-on experiments and engaging demonstrations. They will explore the fundamental principles of forces such as gravity, friction, and magnetism. Students will develop a deeper understanding of how these forces shape the world around us and their impact on everyday life
HASS
In Term 2 students will continue to explore the diversity of different groups within their local community, consider how personal identity is shaped by aspects of culture, and by the groups to which they belong. We will examine the purpose of laws and distinguish between rules and laws. Make connections between world history events between the 1400s and the 1800s, and the history of Australia, including the reasons for the colonisation of Australia by the British. Students will have the opportunity to Investigate the experiences of British explorers, convicts, settlers and Australia’s first peoples, and the impact colonisation had on the lives of different groups of people. They will analyse the experiences of contact between Australia’s first peoples and others, and the effects these interactions had on people and the environment. We will draw conclusions about how the identities and sense of belonging for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the past and present were and continue to be affected by British colonisation and the enactment of law of terra nullius.
HPE
This term students in the ¾ class will practice a range athletic event in preparation for the Athletics carnival. These events include 100m 200m sprints, 800m, high jump, shot put and long jump.
Drama
Students will develop a character through individual and group exploration, dramatic improvisation and response. They plan a character backstory and change the way they walk, talk and move. At the end of the term students participate in an improvised interview, in character, in front of their class.
LOTE - Chinese
In this unit, students will engage with a range of texts about personal identity. They will learn to introduce personal and family names, and to identify the meaning in names. They will also learn to summarise key points and produce short informative texts that include names and details of themselves. Moreover, they will demonstrate fundamental Chinese reading and writing skills throughout the term.
