News from the Prep - Year 2 Deputy Principal

Wow we are half way through term 2 already! So many exciting things are happening!
Next week we will be participating in the National simultaneous story time with the book Bowerbird Blues by Aura Parker. There may be a few bowers popping up around the school.
This week I have had the opportunity to participate in the Early Years Conference that was held in Cairns. I look forward to sharing some of the fantastic parent resources that are available for families.

News from the Year 3 - 6 Deputy Principal

Welcome to Week 6! We are just past the half way mark of term and our classrooms are buzzing with activity as assessment and reporting rapidly approaches.
Over the last couple of weeks, I have had the pleasure of going into classes and seeing our students working towards their English goals. Our Year 4 students are exploring neologisms and spoonerisms in poetry and were astonished to discover that some of the vocabulary they take for granted have not always been considered ‘real’ words. Year 5 students are learning the art of debating and hopefully it won’t cause too much angst at home as they practice their persuasive argument skills.
A reminder also that our Young Scholars programs wrap up for the semester at the end of this term. Students will be offered a place in Young Scholars Semester 2 based on the report card that will be sent out in Week 10 this term. Students must maintain an A or B standard of achievement in Maths, English & Science and their attendance & behaviour must be exemplary to be offered a place in Semester 2.
Excursions and camps for Term 3 are currently being finalised. Look out for information about the Year 6 camp, Year 5 Boating excursions, and the Year 3 Beach walk over the next couple of weeks.
Regards
Leanne Bell
News from the Wellbeing, Engagement & Inclusion Deputy Principal

A big hello to all our parents and families. It has been great getting to know as many of you as possible around the school at drop off and pick up times, parent meetings or at school parades.
In this newsletter I would like to highlight some websites with helpful information for parents with a focus on everyday challenges like big emotions and school refusal.
Manage everyday challenges with positive parenting strategies
Childhood is made up of many little moments. Difficult moments, magic moments, and more. Because we all want what’s best for our child – now, and in the future – it’s good to be able to make the most of every moment, whether it’s savouring the great ones or coping confidently with the tricky ones.
- Little kids can have BIG emotions. And that can mean tantrums, bedtime battles, aggressive behaviour. Parents and carers need positive solutions that really work, for all kinds of situations.
- When children get better at things like routines, sharing, and getting along with others, family life gets a lot better.
- Small issues are sorted out before they become big ones.
- Kids gain valuable life skills like problem-solving to help them now, and in the future.
- Children can learn to talk about strong emotions and handle them in healthy ways.

School Refusal
Sometimes though, the idea of going to school can be cause for severe distress for a young person and can result in a reluctance to go to school and an increase in nonattendance. High levels of distress and a reluctance to go to school is known as school refusal. This time can be distressing for both parents and children.
There are often several factors that can contribute toward the development of school refusal behaviours including individual, family, school and the community. A young person may be experiencing anxiety, their parents may be separating, they may have transitioned to a new school or experiencing challenges with peers such as bullying. There can be a range of underlying factors that result in severe distress associated with school.

News from the Head of Inclusive Education

Our students are showing us that they are ready to learn each day at school and are focussed on their learning which is evident in their work and behaviour.
In Term 2 in the Inclusive Education Centre, we liaise with regional staff such as departmental therapists and disability advisors to ensure we are working toward a common goal to differentiate support so every student is able to realise their potential. Regional staff and advisors provide our school with specialist advice and recommendations to enable students to access and fully participate in learning on the same basis as their peers.
Why are we required to make reasonable adjustments?
School staff are required to make reasonable adjustments for students with disability under relevant legislation including the:
- Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA)
- Disability Standards for Education 2005 (DSE)
- Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (Qld)
- Human Rights Act 2019 (Qld) (HRA)
What is a reasonable adjustment?
The DSE require reasonable adjustments to be made to enable students with disability to access and participate in education on the same basis as students without disability. On the same basis means that students with disability are provided with opportunities and choices that are comparable to those available to students without disability.
An adjustment is reasonable if it:
- supports a student with disability to participate in education on the same basis as other students
- takes into account the student’s learning needs
- balances the interests, including safety, of all parties, such as the student with disability, staff members and other students.
We value culture and inclusion at Trinity Beach State School and know that partnerships between school and regional staff, parents/carers and community organisations assist us to identify and implement reasonable adjustments for students with disability and additional needs at our school.
If you would like to learn more about reasonable adjustments for your child, please make a time to see me in the Inclusive Education Centre.

News from the Head of Department Curriculum Prep - Year 6

We are well into Term 2, and students have begun their assessments. It is crucial for students to attend school regularly to ensure they can complete their assessments successfully. Please make sure to check with your child's teacher for the assessment dates or refer to the year level curriculum overview that was sent out in Week 3.
Semester One report cards will be emailed out in week 10 to the email address provided to the school upon your child’s enrolment. If there have been any changes to your contact information, please contact the administration office to have it updated.
News from the Guidance Officer

Hello everybody – I hope your year is progressing well, and your child/ren are now settled into their classes and school routines.
It has been wonderful to see how many students have been working on their emotional regulation, and have improved these skills – a HUGE thank you to the families who are doing this work at home, to support what is also being done at school.
Support options for families
- If you’re worried about your child’s mental health, your General Practitioner (GP) can be an excellent support. Have a chat with them about what support options might be available. Make an appointment with your GP for your child (and you) to attend together. If a face to face appointment is not possible, Telehealth (over the phone) appointments can also be a good option. Discuss your worries with your GP, and see what supports / ideas they can offer. All GPs have training in assessing mental health and wellbeing.
- Link with phone or online services to get some ideas on promoting wellbeing for your child. A range of excellent websites and phone services are available – here are a few links to get you started.
Parentline – phone 1300 301 300 or online at www.parentline.com.au
Kids’ Help Line – phone 1800 551 800 or online at https://kidshelpline.com.au
Beyond Blue – phone 1300 224 636 or https://healthyfamilies.beyondblue.org.au
- Speak with services to get some support for you / your child / children – some options include:
Act for Kids have support available for you and your family. You can self-refer by calling 13 32 64 (intake number) and discussing what support or assistance you’re looking for. Their main office is located in Cairns City, however they can do outreach appointments (to your area) if needed, or meetings by phone.
Uniting Care Counselling – Provide 1:1 counselling for children and adults, and can do this at school for children if needed, families can self-refer – Ph 1300 096 203
Centacare counselling – Provide 1:1 counselling for children and adults, and can do this at school for children if needed, families can self-refer – Ph 4044 0130
- If any of these services would like information about what we (staff) see at school – regarding your child – we are able to provide this with your consent.

Q Parents
To continue to streamline the school’s sale for all items – school fees, excursions, performances, instrumental music we are moving to a cashless school. This allows our school to reduce the time, effort and expenses required to collect and follow up payments from parents and students. When you receive an invoice payments can be made online via BPOINT or QParents.
We are proud of being a relatively-cashless school and thank you for moving online with us!
QParents
QP is an online portal helping the school move toward a cashless and paper friendly school.
- The QP portal allows Parents and Carers to grant participation consent online for activities such as swimming and excursions which reduces our need to print out paper consent forms
- Also, the QP portal enables Parents and Carers to make payment online for school activities and viewing unpaid invoices payment history.
Thank you to all those parents who have registered for QParents. This means every registered parent now has the opportunity to access to their children’s student records at their fingertips, anytime, anywhere. Haven’t received an invitation from us yet? There’s still time! Please let us know immediately. Or if you are simply looking for further information, videos and FAQs on QParents, visit https://qparents.qld.edu.au
