Year 4 Term 3 2024 Curriculum Overview
Welcome & General Information
Welcome back after what we hope was a great break for all. We would also like to welcome any new families into the Trinity Beach community.
The purpose of this overview is to share what topics our students will be covering over the duration of this term across all of the learning areas as well as share when students will be assessed on their learning.
For information about specific events please keep a look out on the Trinity Beach State School Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/trinitybeachss/
This term, all year levels will be participating in swimming lessons. Each class has been allocated a week in which they will participate in 4 lessons. A detailed timetable has been sent to families.
To ensure a smooth start to the term, please check to see if your child needs any additional equipment, such as stationary or uniforms and ensure that these are named to reduce the risk of losing them.
We hope that this term is a successful term. As always, if you have any questions about your child’s progress or if you have any concerns your first point of contact is your child’s teacher. The contact details for all the teachers are listed in the “Contact Information” section.
English
Students will be describing the persuasive language features and visual elements of a cereals packaging and how it persuades an audience. Students will also be creating a cereal package design for a new cereal and give a persuasive presentation to their peers.
Maths
This term in Maths, students will be Analysing data by describe different methods for data collection and representation, and evaluate their effectiveness. They will construct data displays from given or collected data. Students will also be recalling multiplication and division facts (change), interpreting simple maps and classify angles. Students will choose appropriate strategies for calculations involving multiplication and division and recall multiplication facts to10 x 10 and related division fact. Students will be classify angles in relation to a right angle interpret information contained in map.
Science
The Beneath our Feet unit provides opportunities for students to explore how natural processes and human activity shape their surroundings. Students’ understanding of soils, rocks and landscapes and how they change over time is developed through hands-on activities and student-planned investigations. Students will also investigate factors that affect the erosion of soils. Students will conduct an investigation that explores how the earth’s surface can change over time due to weathering processes. They will record their findings from a conducted experiment. Students will make predictions and reflect on their findings to compare with their prediction.
Humanities & Social Sciences (HASS)
This term in HASS students will record, sort and represent data and the location of places and their characteristics in different formats, including large-scale maps using basic cartographic conventions. They will describe and compare the main characteristics of the continents of Africa and South America in relation to characteristics. Students will recognise the importance of the environment, including natural vegetation and identify the interconnections between the environment, animals and people.
Health & Physical education (HPE)
In PE, students in year four will be involved in a unit on Netball. Students will learn the skills, strategies and rules of the sport and practice these through modified netball games and activities. The unit provides activities for students to practice and develop fundamental skills such as passing, shooting, defending, player positioning and footwork required for successful game play. Students in year 4 will also take part in an intensive swimming program at the end of the term. In Health, students will examine and interpret health information about cyber safety and online protocols. They reflect on young people's use of digital technologies and online communities, and identify resources to support their safety.
Music
During Term one, students will extend their knowledge about dynamics, pentatonic scale, metre, rhythmic elements and percussion instruments. They will learn a large number of songs and games. Students will listen to and analyse a range of musical pieces.
Technology
Students create a Marble Run to investigate how forces and the properties of materials affect the behaviour of a product or system with a digital component, Micro:bit to add lights and sound.
Drama
Freeze Frames
Students work in small groups of 4–5 to create, present and respond to a freeze frame story around a given theme.
Inclusive Education
English:
In this unit, students engage with ‘Persuasive Packaging’.
They will study various toy packaging and identify the main ideas and detail in persuasive texts.
Students will plan and design their own Lego Box. They will talk about their Lego Box and answer any questions their peers have during their presentation.
Maths:
In Maths, students who have an ICP at Year Level 1 are Describing 2D shapes and 3D objects. They will also be ‘Using the language of direction.’ Students will use the language of direction to follow and give directions to move from place to place. Students will use the correct terms left, right, forward and backwards when giving directions.
Students who have an ICP at Year Level 2 are ‘Drawing 2D shapes and recognising the features of 3D objects.’ The students will draw and identify 2D shapes from clues about its features.
The students will recognise and name 3D shapes and describe features of each shape, for example, faces, edges, vertices and vertex.
They will also interpret simple maps of familiar locations by describing the position of key features, using mathematical language.
Assessment Schedule

Reading & Spelling
Our school continues to embed a whole school approach to reading and spelling across Prep to Year 6. This involves teaching the reading and spelling demands of the Australian Curriculum, providing students with a systematic synthetic phonics approach and unpacking the Big 6/Science of Reading through engaging and meaningful lessons. Students engage with decodable texts when learning to read and rich authentic texts when reading to learn and continue to use the PLD approach for their spelling and sound focus.

QParents
QP is an online portal helping the school move toward a cashless and paper friendly school.
- The QP portal allows Parents and Carers to grant participation consent online for activities such as swimming and excursions which reduces our need to print out paper consent forms
- Also, the QP portal enables Parents and Carers to make payment online for school activities and viewing unpaid invoices payment history.
Thank you to all those parents who have registered for QParents. This means every registered parent now has the opportunity to access to their children’s student records at their fingertips, anytime, anywhere. Haven’t received an invitation from us yet?
