Year 3/4A Term 3 2024 Curriculum Overview
Welcome & General Information
Welcome back after what we hope was a great break for all. We would also like to welcome any new families into the Trinity Beach community. The purpose of this overview is to share what topics our students will be covering over the duration of this term across all of the learning areas as well as share when students will be assessed on their learning. For information about specific events please keep a look out on the Trinity Beach State School Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/trinitybeachss/ This term, all year levels will be participating in swimming lessons. Each class has been allocated a week in which they will participate in 4 lessons. A detailed timetable has been sent to families. To ensure a smooth start to the term, please check to see if your child needs any additional equipment, such as stationary or uniforms and ensure that these are named to reduce the risk of losing them. We hope that this term is a successful term. As always, if you have any questions about your child’s progress or if you have any concerns your first point of contact is your child’s teacher. The contact details for all the teachers are listed in the “Contact Information” section. |

This term students will cover the following topics:
Number and Algebra
Students will learn how to represent money values in various ways and they will develop their knowledge in correctly counting out change from financial transactions. Furthermore, students will solve simple purchasing problems.
Measurement and Geometry
This term, your child will be learning to recognise and classify angles in real situations. They will make models of three-dimensional objects and use metric units for length, mass and capacity compare areas of regular and irregular shapes using informal units. Additionally, students will use scaled instruments to measure temperatures, lengths, shapes and objects.
Statistics and Probability
In Term 3, students will conduct chance experiments and list possible outcomes. They will learn how to list the probabilities of everyday events and identify dependent and independent events.
Science
In our Science unit, students will learn to describe how natural processes and human activity cause changes to Earth’s surface. They will investigate the erosion and weathering process, record observations, compare predictions with their observations and explain their findings. Students will develop an understanding of soils, rocks and landscapes and how they change over time. The unit will also cover how the movement of Earth can cause many things to happen, including movement of shadows, moon phases and our seasons.
Humanities & Social Sciences (HASS)

Reading & Spelling
Our school continues to embed a whole school approach to reading and spelling across Prep to Year 6. This involves teaching the reading and spelling demands of the Australian Curriculum, providing students with a systematic synthetic phonics approach and unpacking the Big 6/Science of Reading through engaging and meaningful lessons. Students engage with decodable texts when learning to read and rich authentic texts when reading to learn and continue to use the PLD approach for their spelling and sound focus.
Homework
Homework will again be highly recommended but not deemed essential. Students will be provided with a daily grid of activities encompassing a variety of subjects. These quick activities are designed to be engaging and enriching, allowing students to choose tasks that align with their interests and areas of focus. I encourage you to actively engage with your child in these activities, fostering open communication about their experiences and discoveries. It is also highly recommended for students in year 3 and year 4 to read independently at home for at least 15 - 20 minutes, 4 times a week. Parents are required to sign their child’s reading log every night. Answers are to be written in their homework books. Homework books with all activities are to be returned at the end of each term. This will allow students time and flexibility to complete the activities in their own time.
