Prep Term 3 2024 Curriculum Overview
Welcome & General Information
Welcome back after what we hope was a great break for all. We would also like to welcome any new families into the Trinity Beach community.
The purpose of this overview is to share what topics our students will be covering over the duration of this term across all of the learning areas as well as share when students will be assessed on their learning.

This term, all year levels will be participating in swimming lessons. Each class has been allocated a week in which they will participate in 4 lessons. A detailed timetable has been sent to families.
To ensure a smooth start to the term, please check to see if your child needs any additional equipment, such as stationary or uniforms and ensure that these are named to reduce the risk of losing them.
We hope that this term is a successful term. As always, if you have any questions about your child’s progress or if you have any concerns your first point of contact is your child’s teacher. The contact details for all the teachers are listed in the “Contact Information” section.
English
This term in our English unit students will:
- listen to and identify knowledge of rhyme through spoken communication
- write a simple sentence containing a noun, verb and simple punctuation
- read, comprehend and understand texts.
Maths
This term in our maths unit we will be covering a range of areas including:
- collecting information and interpreting simple data displays
- time, including sequencing events throughout the day and sequencing the days of the week and connecting them to familiar events
- units of measurement including length, height and mass
Science
This term our Science unit is “Weather in my world”. Weather will be observed and represented using symbols. Students will note changes and how weather impacts on everyday life.
Humanities & Social Sciences (HASS)
This semester our Geography unit provides opportunities for students to:
- Understand that a ‘place’ has features and a boundary that can be represented on maps or globes
- Observe and record the visible elements or features of the ‘place’ they live in and belong to
- Represent the location and direction of visible elements or features of their place on a pictorial map and model
Health & Physical education (HPE)
In PE, students in Prep will explore how to move and play safely during physical activity. They will also develop the fundamental movement skills of running, jumping, hopping and galloping. In Health, students will identify safe settings where they can move and play safely and identify actions that keep them safe in different settings. Students will also identify different emotions people experience in different situations. |
Music
During term three, students will listen to and discuss a variety of musical pieces. These will develop specific music vocabulary. Students will learn a number of songs and musical games and will express themselves through art activities. |
Technology
Students step into the shoes of a Fairytale character to make a designed or digital solution. to assist them in a time of need.
Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood: Exploring how local delivery services meet different needs for people eg/ online shopping items arrive at a person’s home, exploring digital hardware and software.
3 Little Pigs: Compare the houses built by the pigs and discuss the properties of the materials.
Hanzel & Gretal – Students identify the different food that covers the Gingerbread house. Students sort it and display the data in different way.
Visual Arts
This term in Visual Arts, Prep students will view various famous artworks that also relate to characters in books and animated cartoons. Students will explore ideas, experiences, observations, and imagination to recreate the subject of the artwork by crafting. They will use and experiment with different materials, techniques, and processes to make artworks. This year our theme is ‘Bugs, grubs and all thing nice.’
Drama
Stories Come to Life; ‘Journey’
Students make and respond to drama by using the picture book ‘Journey’ as a stimulus as they bring the characters to life with voice, movement and improvisations for performance.

Reading & Spelling
Our school continues to embed a whole school approach to reading and spelling across Prep to Year 6. This involves teaching the reading and spelling demands of the Australian Curriculum, providing students with a systematic synthetic phonics approach and unpacking the Big 6/Science of Reading through engaging and meaningful lessons. Students engage with decodable texts when learning to read and rich authentic texts when reading to learn and continue to use the PLD approach for their spelling and sound focus.
Homework
Homework will continue to be handed out each Friday and returned the following Thursday. Homework tasks will include reading, practising reading and writing spelling words and recognising Irregular High Frequency Words (IHFW). We as that you assist your child to complete 10 minutes of homework each afternoon to support the learning they do in class.
Attendance
How to report an absence:
- Email attendance@trinitybeachss.eq.edu.au or
- Call the school's absence line on 4057 1444, then press #1 and don't forget to leave a reason why your child/children are away, or
- Send a note to the classroom teacher on their return
Our school’s attendance target is 95%
QParents
QP is an online portal helping the school move toward a cashless and paper friendly school.
- The QP portal allows Parents and Carers to grant participation consent online for activities such as swimming and excursions which reduces our need to print out paper consent forms
- Also, the QP portal enables Parents and Carers to make payment online for school activities and viewing unpaid invoices payment history.
