Year 1 Term 4 2024 Curriculum Overview
Welcome & General Information
Welcome back after what we hope was a great break for everyone. We would also like to welcome any new families into the Trinity Beach community. The purpose of this overview is to share what topics our students will be covering over the duration of this term across all of the learning areas as well as share when students will be assessed on their learning. English
This term, students will be writing a story using a stimulus picture to guide their writing. For their assessment the children will choose from a number of pictures and write their own story. Throughout the term we will be writing stories focusing on the setting, characters, complication and resolution. We will be encouraging children to use a variety of descriptive words to make their story interesting.
Maths
We are continuing to build on our work from Terms 1,2 and 3.
- Patterns and algebra - describe and represent growing patterns, apply rules to continue a growing pattern, representing and describing addition and subtraction patterns
- Fractions and decimals - identify one half of an item and identifying half of a group
- Number and Place value - joining parts to make a whole, identifying unknown parts in addition and subtraction, develop and refine strategies for addition and subtraction problems, investigating how to recall number facts, skip counting by 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s, representing two-digit numbers and counting beyond 100
- Data representation and interpretation - ask suitable questions to collect data, collect and represent data
Chance - identify the chance of events occurring, predict outcomes of familiar events – will happen, won’t happen, might happen
Science
Spot the Difference Our unit this term is called Spot the difference. In this unit, students will be investigating changes that happen around us in the context of food such as chocolate, popcorn and spaghetti. They will learn about how heating and cooling food can change its properties and whether or not the change can be reversed. |
Humanities & Social Sciences (HASS)
My changing world This is a continuation of unit from term 3. Students continue to investigate a local place to identify and describe its features, the activities that occur there, how the place changes and ways to care for it. |
Health & Physical education (HPE)
Students in year one will perform the fundamental movement skills of two-handed throwing, two-handed catching, soccer dribbling and basketball dribbling in a variety of movement situations.
Music
In this unit, students will learn main rhythmical elements – Ta, Ti-ti, Za, Vah and Great Vah. They will explore sounds as they learn to listen to and make rhythmical patterns using a variety of percussion instruments. They will also learn to discriminate between long and short sounds and silence.
Technology
Students are looking closely at Technologies used on the farm in the following ways.
This term, students will explore familiar digital systems, recognising systems are made up of hardware and software. They recognise digital systems can be used as solutions to solve everyday problems.

Visual Arts
This term, students in Year 1 will as learn different painting techniques with an array of materials. They will cut and assemble their artwork which will include a skilfully crafted foil mini beast. This is keeping with this year’s theme of ‘Bugs, Grubs and All Things Nice’.
Drama
In this unit students explore the world of toys through improvisation, movement, voice and storytelling. They will base a character on their favourite toy and bring it to life!
IEC
Welcome back to an exciting term 4 at TBSS! Our names are Caroline Houston and Danika Sydenham and our roles are Inclusive Education Teachers (IET’s). We provide tailored and individualised supports for students with additional needs in the year 1 and 2 cohort.
We support students and teachers in their classrooms and facilitate targeted intervention sessions for individual students and small groups. Our focus is on making daily adjustments to ensure all students can access the curriculum at their level and are supported academically and socially to achieve their very best.

Reading & Spelling
Our school continues to embed a whole school approach to reading and spelling across Prep to Year 6. This involves teaching the reading and spelling demands of the Australian Curriculum, providing students with a systematic synthetic phonics approach and unpacking the Big 6/Science of Reading through engaging and meaningful lessons. Students engage with decodable texts when learning to read and rich authentic texts when reading to learn and continue to use the PLD approach for their spelling and sound focus.
Homework
Reading homework will continue the same as term 3. Please try and read with your child at least 3 times a week..
Attendance
How to report an absence:
- Email attendance@trinitybeachss.eq.edu.au or
- Call the school's absence line on 4057 1444, then press #1 and don't forget to leave a reason why your child/children are away, or
- Send a note to the classroom teacher on their return
Our school’s attendance target is 95%
QParents
QP is an online portal helping the school move toward a cashless and paper friendly school.
- The QP portal allows Parents and Carers to grant participation consent online for activities such as swimming and excursions which reduces our need to print out paper consent forms
- Also, the QP portal enables Parents and Carers to make payment online for school activities and viewing unpaid invoices payment history.
