Year 3/4A Term 4 2024 Curriculum Overview
Welcome & General Information
Welcome to term 4!! As we enter the final term of the year, I want to take a moment to thank you for your support throughout this year. It has been a privilege to teach your children this year, and I am truly proud of their growth and the progress they have made. We have an exciting 11-week term ahead, with the last week dedicated to supervisory activities to ensure a smooth transition into the holidays. This term, I will continue to encourage organisational skills by having all equipment ready and organised for the start of the day. As mentioned last term, managing time allows students to make the most of their learning opportunities. It enables them to meet task deadlines and balance their academic and extracurricular activities successfully. We are particularly excited about the upcoming excursions for our Year 4 students and I kindly ask that all payments and permission notes be submitted as soon as possible to facilitate our planning. We are also looking forward to our fabulous Art Show and Encore that will occur in the next couple of weeks. In addition to our core subjects, students will continue to enjoy their specialist lessons in Technology, HPE, and Music. These programs not only enhance their learning but also foster creativity and physical well-being. I am looking forward to a wonderful final term filled with continued growth and celebration. Thank you once again for your partnership and encouragement this year!. |
English
In English this term, your child will be reading "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" by Jeff Kinney, followed by watching the movie adaptation. This unit will involve a detailed book versus film comparison, allowing students to explore the narrative in depth. By reading the text and viewing the film, they will gain a better understanding of the story and its characters. Students will participate in activities designed to spark discussions about the similarities and differences between the book and the movie. Ultimately, they will form an opinion on their preferred version, supported by their reasoning, enhancing their critical thinking skills.
Maths
In Mathematics this term, your child will be exploring various concepts in Measurement and Geometry, as well as Number and Algebra. They will learn to tell the time to the nearest minute and convert between units of time, as well as solve problems involving time duration. In Number and Algebra, students will model and represent unit fractions, recognise common equivalent fractions in familiar contexts, and make connections between fraction and decimal notations up to two decimal places. Additionally, Year 4 will practice locating familiar fractions on a number line, which will help deepen their understanding of these essential mathematical concepts. |
Science
This term in Science, students will be learning about living things and how their relationships affect life cycles. They will discover how science helps us understand the impact of different actions on these organisms. Through hands-on activities, your child will gather and share their findings, building skills in observation and analysis. This unit will encourage them to think critically about how all living things are connected and highlight the importance of exploring the natural world through scientific inquiry.
Humanities & Social Sciences (HASS)
In this unit, students will research countries within the continents of South America and Africa. They will continue to learn about:
- How places are represented geographically
- Compare the climates, settlement patterns and population characteristics of places, and how these affect communities, past and present.
The concept of sustainability, and its application to resource use and waste management, past and present, by different groups.
Health & Physical education (HPE)
Students in year 3/4 will perform the fundamental movement skills of dribbling, push passing, trapping and shooting in hockey skill-based activities and game situations. They propose and combine movement concepts (space, effort, time and relationships) and offensive and defensive strategies to achieve outcomes in hockey.
Music
In this unit, students will learn about rondo form. They will be introduced to a semiquaver rest and how anacrusis is used in songs. They will consolidate their knowledge of compound time, accents on strong beats in a bar and knowledge of notes on the staff. Students will learn correct conducting technique for different time signatures.

Reading & Spelling
Our school continues to embed a whole school approach to reading and spelling across Prep to Year 6. This involves teaching the reading and spelling demands of the Australian Curriculum, providing students with a systematic synthetic phonics approach and unpacking the Big 6/Science of Reading through engaging and meaningful lessons. Students engage with decodable texts when learning to read and rich authentic texts when reading to learn and continue to use the PLD approach for their spelling and sound focus.
Homework
Homework will again be highly recommended but not deemed essential. Students will be provided with a daily grid of activities encompassing a variety of subjects. These quick activities are designed to be engaging and enriching, allowing students to choose tasks that align with their interests and areas of focus. I encourage you to actively engage with your child in these activities, fostering open communication about their experiences and discoveries. It is also highly recommended for students in year 3 and year 4 to read independently at home for at least 15 - 20 minutes, 4 times a week. Parents are required to sign their child’s reading log every night. Answers are to be written in their homework books. Homework books with all activities are to be returned at the end of each term. This will allow students time and flexibility to complete the activities in their own time.
