Year 4 Term 4 2024 Curriculum Overview
Welcome & General Information
Welcome back after what we hope was a great break for all. We would also like to welcome any new families into the Trinity Beach community. The purpose of this overview is to share what topics our students will be covering over the duration of this term across all of the learning areas as well as share when students will be assessed on their learning. For information about specific events please keep a look out on the Trinity Beach State School Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/trinitybeachss/ To ensure a smooth start to the term, please check to see if your child needs any additional equipment, such as stationary or uniforms and ensure that these are named to reduce the risk of losing them. Pencils and glue always come in handy. We hope that this term is a successful term. As always, if you have any questions about your child’s progress or if you have any concerns your first point of contact is your child’s teacher. The contact details for all the teachers are listed in the “Contact Information” section. |
English
In this unit, students will be exploring the book “Uncle X Box” by Jared Thomas.
The story touches on important themes such as family, identity, and connection to culture. Through class and group discussions, students will engage with the book by listening to, reading, viewing, and interpreting the story, with a focus on its themes, language features, and plot structure.
Students will also have the opportunity to express their opinions and reflect on the key themes by writing their own book reviews. These reviews will showcase their understanding and personal responses to the story.
Maths
In this unit, students will be learning about fractions and decimals in everyday situations. They will recognise and work with common fractions, mixed numbers, and how these relate to decimals. Students will practise finding fractions of a quantity, placing them on a number line, and converting between mixed numbers and improper fractions. They will also use these skills to solve simple purchasing problems, including rounding amounts to the nearest 5 cents and calculating change. Additionally, students will explore strategies for solving number problems with missing values, helping to build their problem-solving skills.
Science
In the Plants in action unit students will develop a sense of wonder and appreciation of plants as they investigate the processes of pollination and germination, students sequence the life cycle of a bean. They consider a plant’s life cycle and environmental conditions that plants need for growth.
Humanities & Social Sciences (HASS)
In this unit students continue to investigate a range of environmental sustainability issues. Students will learn about natural resources and examine how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples maintain a deep connection with the environment. The unit will also cover topics such as how waste is managed, and the negative effects of human activity. Through these investigations, students will gain a deeper understanding of the world around them. Students will propose a sustainable practice to reduce the impact of the sustainability issue. |
Health & Physical education (HPE)
Students in year four will focus on applying strategies for working cooperatively and apply rules fairly in the game of Tee-Ball. They will refine their striking and fielding skills and concepts in active play and games. |

They will consolidate their knowledge of compound time, accents on strong beats in a bar and knowledge of notes on the staff. Students will learn correct conducting technique for different time signatures.
Technology
Students continue to explore and develop an understanding of more complex algorithms that incorporate sequencing, comparison operators (branching) and iteration (repetition of instructions).
.
Drama
Students will develop a character through individual and group exploration, dramatic improvisation and response. They plan a character backstory and change the way they walk, talk and move. At the end of the term students participate in an improvised interview, in character, in front of their class.

Students who have an ICP at Year Level 2 are focusing on their Title, Orientation (Who, When, Where, What)? , Complication and Resolution of their narrative. Maths: In Maths, students who have an ICP at Year Level 1 are studying ‘Number Sequences’ (counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s) and continuing patterns. The students will also study ‘Data’ and ‘Measuring Using Informal Units.’ In Maths, students who have an ICP at Year Level 2 are studying ‘Using a Calender’, ‘Addition and Subtraction’, ‘Recognising the value of money and performing simple addition and subtraction calculations’ and ‘Counting, multiplying and dividing.’ Every Monday, within our small group, (‘Social Skills’) we revise the particular ‘Focus Skill’ each week and we ensure that everyone understands what the expectations are. We also have small groups in the IEC which focus on developing children’s fine gross motor skills. Every Friday we have our cooking group where we encourage the children to make/cook recipes. During our cooking sessions we encourage the children to do as much as they can independently, developing their self-care skills. |
