Year 6 Term 1 2025 Curriculum Overview
Welcome & General Information
Welcome to the first term of Year 6. Our 2025 Year 6 Teaching Team consists of Mrs. Rhonda Zeylmans (6A), Ms. Melanie Wilton (6B), Mr. Christopher Clair (6C), Mr. Kutz Ali (6D), Miss. Shannon Devlin (6E), Mrs. Cara Humphries (6F), Mrs. Lisa Croatto (IEC) This year the students are seniors and the leaders of the school. There will be many opportunities for them to step up and be positive role models for the younger students of our school. As a leader the students need to ensure they are consistently demonstrating our school expectations and leading by example including wearing the correct uniform. They are expected to arrive to school on time and be ready and organised with the correct equipment at the start of each day. Please check with your child regularly that they have everything they need for school. The assessment schedule for Term 1 is included in this outline (see table below), this provides a good insight into what your child is working on in class and their assessment task. If you have any questions regarding this, please contact your child’s classroom teacher. We look forward to a positive and productive term. Upcoming events that will be occurring for Year 6 students are: Term 2 – Week 2 – Great Barrier Reef Trip excursion Term 3 – Week 3 – Year 6 Camp at Camp Paterson As more information about these events comes to hand it will be sent out via QParents or letters home. BYOx program This year all classes are part of the TNLA-TBSS BYOx program, after a successful pilot program in 2023, it has been extended to all in Year 6. It is a giant learning curve for students and their teachers to adapt to a new way of learning. This term, classes focus on building digital literacy skills and building routines and processes for the safe and effective use of devices for learning. Students will start to learn how to use our main elearning platform “Qlearn” which replaces the Learning Place/EStudios of previous years. This is then coupled with a selection of curated websites and learning platforms to maximise learning for all students. Students will begin by working on assessments online and will steadily grow with their digital learning as the year progresses. If you have any questions around your student’s digital journey, please contact their classroom teacher for more information. Welcome back after what we hope was a great break for all. We would also like to welcome any new families into the Trinity Beach community. The purpose of this overview is to share what topics our students will be covering over the duration of this term across all of the learning areas as well as share when students will be assessed on their learning. For information about specific events please keep a look out on the Trinity Beach State School Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/trinitybeachss/ |
English
This term, students will embark on creating a travel brochure about a destination of their choice, tailoring it to a specific target audience by thoughtfully selecting structural, language, and visual features. They will use digital software to design and publish their brochures. At the end of the term, students will have the opportunity to showcase their work by presenting their brochures at a school travel expo. |
Maths
In unit 1, Year 6 students will bridge the gap between theoretical mathematics and practical application by utilising the popular game Minecraft as a learning platform. The project focuses on enhancing students' understanding of number properties, specifically prime, composite, and square numbers, and applying these concepts to solve real-world problems. This interactive approach not only solidifies mathematical principles but also fosters creativity and problem-solving skills.
Science
We are excited to inform you that our current unit of study focuses on the powerful forces of nature, specifically cyclones, as part of our exploration of natural disasters. This topic is particularly relevant now, as we are in the midst of cyclone season. In addition to cyclones, the students will also delve into the study of earthquakes and their profound impact on the Earth's surface and communities. Throughout this unit, our students will engage in hands-on activities to gather, record, and interpret data related to weather patterns and geological events. This practical approach will help them understand the significance of these natural phenomena and their effects on environments and populations. We look forward to an enriching and enlightening exploration of these vital topics with our students.
Humanities & Social Sciences (HASS)
Students will use the content of lessons and their own guided research to create a presentation that compares and contrasts Australia to another country in Asia. This includes information on geography, economics, demographics and landforms/biomes. |
Health & Physical education (HPE)
In PE, students in year six will perform and combine specialised tennis skills to open up space on the court to win or gain the upper hand within gameplay. Students will demonstrate skills to work collaboratively and play fairly during tennis related activities and games. In Health, students will describe the key features of health-related fitness and the significance of physical activity participation to health and wellbeing.
Music
During Term One, students will learn about major and minor modes, quaver rest, bouncy rhythm, syncopation, tied notes and brass instruments. They will learn a number of songs and games, listen to and analyse a range of musical pieces.
Technology
Students will develop and modify digital solutions, and define problems and evaluate solutions using user stories and design criteria. They will process data and show how digital systems represent data. Students will design algorithms involving complex branching and iteration and implement them as visual programs including variables. They will securely access and use multiple digital systems and describe their components and how they interact to process and transmit data. Students will select and use appropriate digital tools effectively to plan, create, locate and share content, and to collaborate, applying agreed conventions and behaviours. They will identify their digital footprint and recognise its permanence.
Drama
Fractured Fairy Tales
Students will work in small groups to create, present and respond to a Fractured Fairy Tale. They will investigate what elements make up a Fractured Fairy tale (parody) and then present a targeted script to junior school students.
Visual Arts
Our theme this year in Visual Arts is ‘The Splendiferous World of Roald Dahl’. Each year level will have a different book to use as a creative focus. This term, year 6 students will be creating an art pieces based on the book ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.’ We will be creating scrumdiddlyumptious art works. Last year your child learned bout the seven elements of art, this year, we will build on this knowledge and learn about the seven principles of art. These are: pattern, rhythm, balance, contrast, emphasis, movement and unity. These principles help organise the elements to make visually appealing art works.

Reading & Spelling
Our school continues to embed a whole school approach to reading and spelling across Prep to Year 6. This involves teaching the reading and spelling demands of the Australian Curriculum, providing students with a systematic synthetic phonics approach and unpacking the Big 6/Science of Reading through engaging and meaningful lessons. Students engage with decodable texts when learning to read and rich authentic texts when reading to learn and continue to use the PLD approach for their spelling and sound focus.
Homework
Homework for Term 4 will continue as the classroom teachers have previously implemented. Any changes to this will be sent through to specific classes via email.

QP is an online portal helping the school move toward a cashless and paper friendly school.
- The QP portal allows Parents and Carers to grant participation consent online for activities such as swimming and excursions which reduces our need to print out paper consent forms
- Also, the QP portal enables Parents and Carers to make payment online for school activities and viewing unpaid invoices payment history.
Thank you to all those parents who have registered for QParents. This means every registered parent now has the opportunity to access to their children’s student records at their fingertips, anytime, anywhere. Haven’t received an invitation from us yet?
