Principal Message
News from the Prep - Year 2 Deputy Principal

It is so hard to believe that it is week 9 already!
We are a quarter of the way through the school year already!
I am so proud of all our Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 students. They have been doing an amazing job engaging in the learning in the classroom. I have enjoyed hearing the oral retells of stories in Prep and also seeing the prep students blending sounds together to read words!! In year 1 they have been writing a procedure for a disgusting sandwich, and let me tell you, I do NOT want any of them to make my lunch! In year 2 they have been working hard on their animal information reports ! So fantastic to see the great writing that our year 2 students are producing.
Crazy Hat
Don’t forget! It is Crazy Hat Parade on Thursday 3rd of April from 9.15 in the hall! I have seen a few photos of the crazy hats being made at home! Hurrah for hot glue guns!!
We are looking forward to celebrating the end of the school term with our fun Crazy Hat parade!
All welcome to come along and join in the fun!
Junior Cross Country
Hopefully the weather will settle and the ground will dry out for our Junior Cross Country on Friday 4th of April (last day of term 1!).
Please take note of the times below which are an approximate start time for each race. To avoid disappointment please be at least 15 minutes earlier than stated so that you do not miss out on your child’s race!!
- 9:20am - Prep Boys – 400m
- 9:25am – Prep Girls – 400m
- 9:35am – Year 1 Boys – 500m
- 9:45 am – Year 1 Girls – 500m
- 9:55am – Year 2 Boys – 900m
- 10:10am – Year 2 Girls – 900m
- 10:25am – Year 3 Boys – 1.3km
- 10:40am – Year 3 Girls – 1.3km
This day is a fun event where all students are encouraged to do their very best!
Playground/Oval use before and after school.
Playgrounds and the Oval are out of bounds before and after school. We are seeing an increasing number of students being allowed to play in these areas by their parents or without supervision while waiting for parents to pick them up. We work extremely hard to ensure that our school culture promotes a safe, respectful environment. We do this every day through classroom teaching, Parade and every staff member, helping to remind all students of the expectations to keep that culture strong. What we have noticed is that after school, students are running off into the Prep playground, or the 1/2 oval not properly supervised and the play evolves into inappropriate behaviours, blurring the behaviour expectations. Students are then getting hurt or upset and parents are wanting the school to follow up and, while we do follow up with students, before 8.30am and after 3pm, the students are in your care and supervision. There are no staff on duty at 3pm to supervise students. Please help us promote the school wide behaviour expectations by ensuring your child is with you at the end of the day or waiting in the designated pick-up place, not on playgrounds and/or the oval areas.
Staff Car Parking
Please remember that the staff carpark is NOT for parent use. This space is out of bounds to all students for safety reasons as there are cars, trucks and garbage trucks using this driveway and carpark at all times of the day. Using this carpark to pick up students is sending mixed messages to our students and is very dangerous. Please respect this safety rule for our school.
Have a safe and wonderful Easter break!
I look forward to seeing everyone after the school holidays ready for Term 2!
Martina Jackman
News from the Year 3 - 6 Deputy Principal

I can’t believe that we are at the end of our first term! Just 1 week to go and then a nice break for all which will hopefully involve some nice weather 😊
The final week will be a busy time for our students who are working hard to complete assessments and finalise class projects. While students have been putting in a terrific effort this term, we understand that they are getting tired (particularly Year 5 and Year 3 students after their huge efforts with NAPLAN), however we encourage all students to stick to their regular school routines next week and continue demonstrating their best behaviours in and out of the classroom.
What we have been up to…
Student Council:
Our elected Student Council for 2025 have officially began meeting together each fortnight to discuss and enact ideas of their own and peers to support our school, community and environment.

The team is supported by Year Level Student Council Coordinators – Yr 4: Rosanna Rivera, Yr 5: Chloe Rutledge and Yr 6: Rhonda Zeylmans, along with Jo McNicol (ESO) and myself.
The Student Council’s first big undertaking this year has been launching our school’s recycling program to support our school and community’s environmental awareness. To kick start this within Trinity Beach State School, we were excited to take part in Triple MMMs ‘Tammy’s Recycling Recruits’ competition over weeks 7 and 8. Students, staff and community members demonstrated their ability to come together and promote the importance of recycling by collecting a whopping – 4284 recyclable cans/bottles/poppers over the two weeks; what an amazing effort!!! Overall, we came second in the competition out of 10 schools, which is a terrific feat! We raised over $400 for our Student Council and our students have successfully sent the message out to our school and community the significance of recycling right for our environment. Thank you to everyone involved!

Young Scholars:
It was so lovely to have so many families join us for the Young Scholars information session at the beginning of the year. This was a great opportunity to share the what, the how and the why of the program to our parents, carers and potential future Young Scholars

Our Young Scholars have been busy throughout the Term engaging in the fields of – Philosophy in Action, Makerspace, Adventures in Science, Sustainability and Entrepreneurs of the Future.
Smithfield State High School – Parent and Student Information Session:
On Wednesday night the 26th of March Smithfield State High School ran their Parent/Carer and Student information session. Many of our families attended this session to learn about the school, our partnership in the Tropical North Learning Academy and gained an insight into subjects including electives that will be available to our year 6 students transitioning to year 7 at Smithfield SHS next year. If you are interested in enrolling at Smithfield SHS but missed this event, they are holding their first enrolment session on the 30th of April. Please see the Smithfield SHS webpage or contact their administration for more details.

Making Learning Visible
This Term we have continued our journey to make learning visible within our classrooms. What does this mean? It means that we are actively engaging our students in their learning journey. By inviting students to reflect on their own goals and co-construct success criteria and samples of work for learning, we are encouraging our students to be metacognitive learners. One of the ways that we ‘Make Learning Visible’ is through our Learning Walls. These learning walls are:
- Interactive learning spaces aligned with curriculum and assessment
- Co-constructed learning environments to track and monitor student/individual progress
- A space to display student work that is central so it can be quickly referenced by the learners
- A space that allows students to take ownership of their work and individual goals
- An area which contains prompts or scaffolds to support learning growth throughout a unit into assessment
Learning walls in action:

News from the Wellbeing, Engagement & Inclusion Deputy Principal

Hi everyone!
The past few weeks have seen classes start to engage with our Social Emotional Learning Program. This was previously just the Pause Program, however, moving forward the Pause Program will be embedded within Social Emotional Learning. This gives us the flexibility to engage with a wider variety of resources and target a broader range of skills. Please see below an outline on what students have been working on so far.
Students were excited this week to spend their hard-earned trinity dollars on the opportunity to do a cooking lesson with Miss Wilson! Thanks to Miss Wilson for donating your time. Also, a big thank you to Miss Hanley, Miss Simpson-Taylor, and the volunteer students that keep this initiative going!
Thanks for a great Term 1 everyone! Please take some time over the school holidays to rest & reset, ready to hit the ground running in Term 2.
Social Emotional Learning
Students have begun participating in Social Emotional Learning lessons. These lessons are focused on the following skills:
- Self Awareness
- Self Management
- Social Awareness
- Social Management
The Pause Program, is embedded within these lessons, and students have been learning about how their brain works and will start to learn strategies to self-regulate their emotions and behaviour, using the Pause process.
The three key parts of the brain that are taught in the Pause Program are:

What can you do at home?
Check in with your child each day:
- Ask them to notice how they are feeling right now… to reflect on their current feelings. This can be done before and after school.
- What are three good things that happened at school today?
- What did you find difficult/challenging at school today?
- What could you do differently next time?
- Start to use the language of Pause to guide your discussion and support your child to reflect on their behaviour. Using the animals as a prompt is a great way to start!
Positive Culture for Learning (PCL)
Please remind students to Be Kind and follow our school rules every day. I’ve challenged students this fortnight to:
- Think about how they can be kind/nice to others
- Say something kind to others
- Do something kind for others
Sometimes students try to gain peer attention in inappropriate ways e.g., calling them names, taking hats, refusing to share/take turns. This is all developmentally appropriate, however, learning the right way to respond is essential. Remind them of our High five so we can all play safely.

News from the Head of Inclusive Education

As term 1 draws to a close, it has been wonderful to see how settled our students have become in their class routines.
In Weeks 8 and 9 of this term, our Year 3 and 5 students participated in NAPLAN (The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) tests. Our IEC teachers worked collaboratively with class teachers and parents to ensure adjustments were available to support our IEC students.
Also this term in the Inclusive Education Centre, staff from our regional office have been working closely with Prep teachers and IEC staff to strengthen our understanding of evidence-based strategies that best support Prep learners with additional needs. Through this collaboration, we have also reflected on the concepts of equity and equality in education.
Equity vs. Equality in Education
- Equity in education refers to fairness in learning opportunities. It involves reforming practices, policies, and procedures to ensure every child receives the resources, interventions, and support they need to succeed.
- Equality in education means providing the same resources to all students, regardless of their individual needs.
The key difference is that while equality gives every student the same support, equity tailors support to meet each student’s unique needs.
A great visual representation of this concept is comparing bicycles:

- In an equal system, every student receives the same bike, but it may not fit their needs.
- In an equitable system, each student receives a bike that suits their abilities and requirements—this is an example of a reasonable adjustment.
As we continue through the term, our focus remains on creating a learning environment that fosters fairness, inclusion, and success for all students. If you would like to learn more about inclusion at our school or discuss reasonable adjustments for your child, please make a time to see me in the Inclusive Education Centre.
Have an enjoyable Easter break and I look forward to term 2.
Caroline 😊
News from the Head of Department Curriculum Prep - Year 6

Firstly, I would like to begin by thanking all of our Year 3 and 5 Students, parents and teachers for all their hard work and support during the NAPLAN testing period. Schools should get the results from NAPLAN next term which they will then use as a tool to develop teacher capability and identify areas of improvements for our students.
As we get closer to the end of term, assessments are being marked by our teacher and results are being shared with students. All of our teachers meet to engage in a process called moderation. Moderation aligns teachers’ judgements against the achievement standards to ensure consistency of grades across each cohort. This is also a fantastic opportunity to see some of the brilliant work our students produce.
In the sporting space our year Rugby team has retained the School of Origin shield and have gone undefeated in the interschool Challenge. Well done to all players and coach Jack O’Grady! Next week we have both junior and senior cross country.

News from the Guidance Officer

The last couple of weeks of each school term can be really tough for children and young people. They are often VERY ready for a break by the time school holidays roll around. If you’re seeing a spike in behaviour from your child at the moment, it may be because they are a bit worn out – things to consider – Are they getting enough sleep? Is the sleep good quality or are they waking regularly? Has their diet changed in response to their low energy?
If the changes you see in your child continue, and you are concerned, you may wish to consider some of the services listed below.
Supports for families
- School holiday periods can be tough for families – if you need support during this time, the following services are available to assist:
- Act for Kids have support available for you and your family. You can self-refer by calling 13 32 64 (intake number) and discussing what support or assistance you’re looking for. Their main office is located in Cairns City, however they can do outreach appointments (to your area) if needed, or meetings by phone.
- Centacare Cairns - offers counselling, multicultural support, NDIS, aged care, and more services to individuals and families in Cairns and surrounding areas. Their website can be accessed at centacarefnq.org External link and their office is located at 22-34 Aplin Street, Cairns Queensland 4870 – Ph (07) 4044 0130
- UnitingCare – offers individual and family counselling and support in the areas of aged care, disability support, crisis support and health care. Families are able to make a time to visit their offices at 127 Anderson Street, Manunda Queensland 4870, call (07) 4032 6800 or visit their website https://www.unitingcareqld.com.au/
- If you’re worried about your child’s mental health, don’t forget that your General Practitioner (GP) can be an excellent support. Have a chat with them about what support options might be available.
- Online counselling support (for children / teens) is also available through a couple of excellent organisations:
- Beyond Blue is here to help all people in Australia achieve their best possible mental health. Whether you're seeking mental health information or 24/7 qualified support for you or someone else, we're here for you. It's free and confidential. Call a counsellor on 1300 22 4636 or chat to a counsellor online at https://www.beyondblue.org.au/get-support/talk-to-a-counsellor/chat
- KIds Help Line offer over the phone or webchat counselling – they can be contacted by phone on 1800 551 800 or https://kidshelpline.com.au/get-help/webchat-counselling
- In an emergency, please call 000. The call centre operators and emergency services workers all have specialised mental health training.
Focus Skills
Focus skills are actively taught and reinforced in classrooms and varying environments around the school. They are directly linked to our school rules. A new skill is introduced on a weekly basis and shared with students at Parade. Focus skills support consistent expectations for students and consistent responses from staff when these expectations are not being met. The focus skills for Weeks 9 and 10 are:

Q Parents

To continue to streamline the school’s sale for all items – school fees, excursions, performances, instrumental music we are moving to a cashless school. This allows our school to reduce the time, effort and expenses required to collect and follow up payments from parents and students. When you receive an invoice payments can be made online via BPOINT or QParents.
We are proud of being a relatively-cashless school and thank you for moving online with us!
QParents
QP is an online portal helping the school move toward a cashless and paper friendly school.
- The QP portal allows Parents and Carers to grant participation consent online for activities such as swimming and excursions which reduces our need to print out paper consent forms
- Also, the QP portal enables Parents and Carers to make payment online for school activities and viewing unpaid invoices payment history.
Thank you to all those parents who have registered for QParents. This means every registered parent now has the opportunity to access to their children’s student records at their fingertips, anytime, anywhere. Haven’t received an invitation from us yet? There’s still time! Please let us know immediately. Or if you are simply looking for further information, videos and FAQs on QParents, visit https://qparents.qld.edu.au
Student Medication

Student medication
If your child requires medication at school:
You will be asked to complete and sign the Consent to Administer Medication form.
- Medication needs to be in original packaging
- Written medical authorisation, completed pharmacy label, medical order, or action plan completed and signed by prescribing health practitioner.
Student Absences

How to report a student absence:
If your student is absent or needs to leave school early - please contact the office by:
- Text (SMS): 0428 621 921 - preferred method
- or call the absence line 4057 1444 - press #1
- or email: attendance@trinitybeachss.eq.edu.au
- QParents
(SMS line does not take calls and no emoji's please)
When students arrive late, they must sign in at the student services window and take their late pass to their classroom. If they are leaving early parents/carers must sign their child/children out from the student services window.

Cross Country
The Trinity Beach State School Cross Country Carnival/Fun Run is fast approaching and will take place on Wednesday 2nd April for Years 4-6 and Friday 4th April for Prep – Year 3 (9-11am). We encourage students to come dressed in their coloured sports house shirts (AGINCOURT, UPOLU, MICHAELMAS AND SUDBURY) and wear the appropriate footwear. Being a sun-smart school, all students must bring and wear their school hat, apply/reapply sunscreen and stay hydrated throughout the day by drinking plenty of water. A healthy breakfast, followed by an adequate morning tea and lunch is also essential in providing your child with the best opportunity to perform at their very best. We recommend a change of uniform and a spare pair of closed footwear to be packed in your child’s school bag, just in case they come across any muddy puddles.
Wednesday 2nd April - Nominated Students – Cross Country
Students born in 2015, 2014, 2013 and 2012 have had the opportunity to nominate themselves during their PE classes to run competitively, to potentially represent our school at the district TCN (Tropical Coast North) Cross Country event in term 2.

To keep you up to date with progress on this objective, I'm pleased to share that we’ve recently launched my new website.
Jump onto www.amyeden.com.au where you'll find my first 6-month action plan outlining our priorities and vision for Cairns.
Schools and families are at the heart of these efforts.
By working together to improve local infrastructure, create safer neighbourhoods, and nurture opportunities in sport, education, and the arts, we can truly build a city where everyone can thrive.
I encourage you to visit my new website to explore these plans and share your ideas. Your involvement is key as we shape a connected, safe, and prosperous Cairns for everyone.
I look forward to working together to build an even brighter future for our community.
