Montessori Term 2 2025 Curriculum Overview
Welcome & General Information
|
English
In English, this term students will read a range of different stories to identify the main characters, setting, complication and resolution. Students will then write a recount of this familiar story for the purpose of sharing with their peers. Students will continue to consolidate their foundational writing skills during this task re sentence structure, punctuation, spelling and handwriting. Students will also develop their speaking recount skills. Via the investigation of local places, they will plan and present oral recounts of this experience to others. Please see the below information re HASS for further information of this work.
In addition, our students will be required to demonstrate their ability to read and answer comprehension questions related to a range of texts.
Maths
In Mathematics, this term our year 1 students will work to demonstrate how one- and two-digit numbers can be partitioned in different ways and that two-digit numbers can be partitioned into tens and ones. Our year 2 students will apply knowledge of place value to partition, rearrange and rename two- and three-digit numbers in terms of their parts, and regroup partitioned numbers to assist in calculations. Problem Solving work will involve our year 1’s solving problems involving addition and subtraction of numbers to 20 and use mathematical modelling to solve practical problems involving addition, subtraction, equal sharing and grouping, using calculation strategies. Our year 2’s students will use mathematical modelling to solve practical additive and multiplicative problems, including money transactions, representing the situation and choosing calculation strategies. Our continued study of Geometry will involve our students making, comparing and classifying shapes and objects using obvious features. Our year 2’s will expand this shape classification using formal spatial terms. To finish the term, we will practise giving and following directions to move people and objects within a space. Our year 2’s will also practise locating and identifying positions of these features in two-dimensional representations and move positions by following directions and pathways.
Science
Our science unit assessment for this semester was covered last term. This term our students will continue to explore the scientific concepts of history, science and geography via the story telling and art related activities of Cosmic Science. Cosmic Science emphasis the interconnectedness of all things, showing how various science concepts and subjects relate to one another. Its aim is to develop a sense of awe and gratitude for the universe and a desire to get involved in the role we all have in shaping a better future for ourselves and others. |
Humanities & Social Sciences (HASS)
This term, our students will be working on a HASS unit entitled ‘People and Places’. Our students will aim to identify, represent and describe the features of familiar places, and suggest ways to care for a special familiar place. To investigate places and their features at a local scale, our students will get to know their local school playgrounds in a whole new exciting way. As noted in our above English unit description, these investigations will culminate in our students presenting an oral recount of their understandings to fellow peers.
Health & Physical education (HPE)
Year 1
In PE, students in year one will continue to develop the fundamental movement skills of dodging and running and test alternatives to evade others and objects in tagging games. They will also explore running, jumping and throwing activities and take part in simple challenges and competitions in athletics.
Year 2
In PE, students in year two will continue to demonstrate fundamental skills to test alternatives to solve movement challenges and reach their targets in different games and sports. They will also explore running, jumping and throwing activities and take part in simple challenges and competitions in athletics.
Music
Year 1
During this Term, students will continue to listen to and analyse music, and practice singing. They will play a wide range of games, which would help to developed rhythm, beat, creativity and improvisation. They also will learn to read, sing and play simple melodies.
Year 2
In this unit, students will appreciate and analyse the music of Saint-Saens. They will consolidate their knowledge of rhythmical elements – Ta, Ti-ti and Za and learn tika-tika(semiquavers). Students will create and perform different rhythmical patterns using known rhythmical elements. They will learn about tuned and un-tuned percussion instruments and use these to produce rhythmical ostinatos. Students will be introduced to the musical forms of the canon, A form and AB form by singing different songs. They will consolidate their knowledge of the pentatonic scale.
Digital literacy
Students develop their digital literacy skills through a range of activities. They locate information through search engines and in documents by applying specific search terms. Students save and retrieve content in agreed locations with appropriate names. They use familiar digital systems to solve problems individually and with peers.
Visual Arts
Year 1
This term’s creative focus book is ‘The Enormous Crocodile. Year 1 students will be sewing and stuffing their very own crocodile made out of felt.
Year 2
This term year 2 students will continue to learn about the 7 elements of art and creating art pieces that incorporate these elements. We will also continue to use the book ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’ as our creative focus. Students will use and experiment with different materials, techniques, technologies and processes to make various artworks which they will critic and display.
Drama
Year 1
In this unit students explore the world of toys through improvisation, movement, voice and storytelling. They will base a character on their favourite toy and bring it to life!
Year 2
In Term 2 students explore the legend of The Pied Piper of Hamelin and consider how the parents of the missing children would have felt (empathy). They make choices about the roles of the Pied Piper, the Mayor and the parents of the missing children as they participate in a process drama. The students explore ideas and solutions by participating in the developing drama and, while in role, share these with others.

Homework
Please remember to hand in homework folder Thursday mornings. Thankyou. A short amount of time should be spent on homework each day after school. Your support in completing this is much appreciated. If you are unsure about how to best support your child, please email your class teacher with any questions. Please note Reading Eggs Subscription, made available via your yearly Montessori class levy payment, is an optional but very worthy homework extra. Just 15mins a day, working through the lessons on your child’s individualised program is a great and very fun way to consolidate reading/spelling foundational knowledge.
Attendance
How to report an absence:
- Email attendance@trinitybeachss.eq.edu.au or
- Call the school's absence line on 4057 1444, then press #1 and don't forget to leave a reason why your child/children are away, or
- Send a note to the classroom teacher on their return
Our school’s attendance target is 95%
QParents
QP is an online portal helping the school move toward a cashless and paper friendly school.
- The QP portal allows Parents and Carers to grant participation consent online for activities such as swimming and excursions which reduces our need to print out paper consent forms
- Also, the QP portal enables Parents and Carers to make payment online for school activities and viewing unpaid invoices payment history.
Thank you to all those parents who have registered for QParents. This means every registered parent now has the opportunity to access to their children’s student records at their fingertips, anytime, anywhere. Haven’t received an invitation from us yet? There’s still time! Please let us know immediately. Or if you are simply looking for further information, videos and FAQs on QParents, visit https://qparents.qld.edu.au
