Year 4 Term 2 2025 Curriculum Overview
Welcome & General Information
Welcome back after what we hope was a great break for all. We would also like to welcome any new families into the Trinity Beach community. The purpose of this overview is to share what topics our students will be covering over the duration of this term across all of the learning areas as well as share when students will be assessed on their learning. For information about specific events please keep a look out on the Trinity Beach State School Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/trinitybeachss/ To ensure a smooth start to the term, please check to see if your child needs any additional equipment, such as stationary or uniforms and ensure that these are named to reduce the risk of losing them. We hope that this term is a successful term. As always, if you have any questions about your child’s progress or if you have any concerns your first point of contact is your child’s teacher. The contact details for all the teachers are listed in the “Contact Information” section. |
English
In this unit, students engage with a variety of poems.
They listen to, read, view and interpret spoken, written and multimodal poems.
These poems use language features including varied sentence structures, some unfamiliar vocabulary that may include English words derived from other languages, a significant number of high-frequency words, words that need to be decoded using phonic and morphemic knowledge, a variety of punctuation conventions, and illustrations and diagrams that support and extend the printed text.
Students will analyse the poems to find the message/purpose behind each of the poems, identify the context and interpret the language features used within the poem.
Maths
Students will:
- use mathematical modelling to solve financial and other practical problems, formulating the problem using number sentences, solving the problem choosing efficient strategies and interpreting results in terms of the situation
- use their proficiency with addition and multiplication facts to add and subtract, multiply and divide numbers efficiently
- choose rounding and estimation strategies to determine whether results of calculations are reasonable
- use the properties of odd and even numbers
- convert between units of time when solving problems involving duration
Science
In Science, students study Physical Sciences and investigate contact and non-contact forces. This includes a focus on both gravity and friction. For the assessment, students will analyse the forces in a "Minute to win it" style game.
Humanities & Social Sciences (HASS)
In HASS (History and Social Studies), students learn about Rules and Laws, and will consider a law to change. They will need to present arguments that consider all points of view. They will also explore their identity, who they are as a person and member of society through the creation of an ‘All About Me’ poster.
Health & Physical education (HPE)
In PE, students in year four will continue to practise and refine fundamental movement skills to perform various skipping skills and solve individual skipping challenges. They will also develop their technical understanding of athletic activities. They will learn how to set targets and improve their performance in a range of running, jumping and throwing activities.
Music
During this Term, students will learn the differences between: tied notes and slurs, legato and staccato, strong and weak beats, and simple and compound time. They also will practice writing simple rhythmical patterns and melodies.
Technology
Students follow and describe simple algorithms involving branching and iteration and implement them as visual programs. They securely access and use digital systems and their peripherals for a range of purposes and identify inputs and outputs. Students use the core features of common digital tools to plan, create, locate and share content, and to collaborate, following agreed behaviours. They identify their personal data stored online and recognise the risks.
Visual Arts
This term year 4 students will continue to assemble their peaches. We have been dutifully creating each of the characters from the book ‘James and the Giant Peach’ and will continue with this art project for this term.
Drama
Students will develop a character through individual and group exploration, dramatic improvisation and response. They plan a character backstory and change the way they walk, talk and move. At the end of the term students participate in an improvised interview, in character, in front of their class.
LOTE (Chinese)
A Day in a Chinese school’ – Students will respond to and produce a simple text by selecting learned words and numbers. Students will show understanding that Pinyin provides access to the sounds of spoken Chinese.
