Reading / Spelling
Our school is implementing a systematic synthetic phonics approach that has a teaching sequence for reading and spelling which goes across the entire school. Promoting Literacy Development or PLD for short, provides teachers with an innovative, evidence-based approach to literacy and advocates that children’s literacy and learning outcomes are maximized when the areas of literacy, oral language and movement & motor skills are simultaneously targeted. With this change, we will be working with decodable texts instead of predictable texts in the teaching of reading.
Due to this change, home reading will look different as well. Students may come home with games with high frequency words or sounds instead of home readers. This is reading practice. Please be assured that students will be getting a much higher level of reading mileage at school every day.
English
In English, students will be learning about poetry. In Year 4, students are advancing from writing poetry to analysing poetry. For the assessment, students will need to analyse poetic language for structure (such as rhyme and rhythm) and word play such as puns, spoonerisms, neologisms and nonsensical words. Students will also evaluate the effectiveness of these language features considering the purpose of the poem.
Maths
In Maths, students started the term by studying the properties of odd and even numbers. They are moving onto learning about measuring length, area, temperature and capacity. Finally we will look at symmetry and tessellation. Students will also be practising their multiplication facts up to multiplying by 10.
Science
In Science, students are learning about and investigate contact and non-contact forces. This includes a focus on both gravity and friction. For the assessment, students will analyse how a particular game uses forces.
HASS
In HASS (History and Social Studies), students will consider a law to change. They will need to present arguments that consider all points of view. They will also explore who they are as a person and member of society through the creation of an ‘All About Me’ poster.
HPE
Students in year 4 will focus on developing their technical understanding of athletic activity. They learn how to set targets and improve their performance in a range of running, jumping and throwing activities. In Health, students will continue to recognise strategies for managing change. They will interpret health messages and discuss the influences on healthy choices.
Music
In this unit, students will learn about rondo form. They will be introduced to a semiquaver rest and how anacrusis is used in songs. They will consolidate their knowledge of compound time, accents on strong beats in a bar and knowledge of notes on the staff. Students will learn correct conducting technique for different time signatures.
Drama
‘Create a Character’
Students will develop a character through individual and group exploration, dramatic improvisation and response. They plan a character backstory and change the way they walk, talk and move. At the end of the term students participate in an improvised interview, in character, in front of their class.
Lote
In this unit, students will use the Chinese language to explore the concept of school life in Chinese-speaking cultures and make connections with their own school experiences. They will engage with a range of texts and discuss about school experiences in Chinese. They will also analyse and understand the Chinese pronunciation and sentence structure.
