Year 3-4 news from the Deputy

Hello,
We are half way through the term and the school is buzzing with activity. It has been lovely popping into classes this week and seeing the learning that is taking place. I had the pleasure of seeing Mrs S and her 4E students borrowing books from the library and enjoying the quiet.
I was also lucky to spot Mrs Hope and a group of students from 4B enjoying their guided reading lesson discussing the effects of large amounts of water on our waterways. The students used their contextual knowledge of the local area to make connections to the text
Congratulations to our year 3’s and 5’s and their teachers for completing their NAPLAN assessments. Student engagement and behaviour has been positive and we are all very proud.
Trinity Beach State School is a brilliant School.
Kind regards,
Emma Taylor

Prep - Year 2 news from the Deputy

Wow we are already in the middle week of term 2! Teachers and students are busy in their classes making sure that students have been taught the required curriculum for the term and getting ready for assessments for our reporting period.
While we are aware that Covid has had a huge impact on some student’s attendance, there are also a number of students that have repeated unexplained absences, causing significant impact on their learning and also on the teachers trying to catch students up. Every Day Counts. The impact your child’s absences have on their learning is significant and this may be evident in their report card.
We love seeing all students every day, with a full tummy and ready to have an amazing day at school.
Head of Department Curriculum Year P-6 news

It’s hard to believe we’re half way through Term 2 already! Over the coming weeks students will be heading into assessment period. For information on what assessment tasks they’ll be participating in and when these take place please check their Term 2 Overviews and Assessment Schedules. These were shared with families in week 3. This will help you to stay updated with your child’s assessment time and enable you to support them appropriately.
Term 2 is a reporting term, reports will be sent out on Thursday week 10, please ensure your email address is updated with the office so you can receive report cards.
Guidance Officer News

A message from the Guidance Officer – Jenny Ferguson.
Hello parents, carers and families – this week we have had an important event at our school, as part of our school’s ongoing work towards inclusivity.
Tuesday 17 May 2022 was the International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia and Transphobia. This day is also known as IDAHOBIT.
On this day, we sought to remind each other that our school needs to be a safe place for our LGBTQIA+ students, staff, families and community members.
This is the second year that Trinity Beach State School has participated in IDAHOBIT, and shared its purpose with students and staff.
We spoke with students about the following:
- The need to be kind to your peers, and be caring towards each other.
- For older students, we also discussed the following:
- If someone is treating a person who identifies as LGBTQIA+ in an unacceptable manner, through their words or actions, you can help.
- You can be an ALLY. An ally is another word for a supporter – this can be someone who stands up against bullying of LGBTQIA+ people, who calls out poor behaviour in others, or who listens to the needs of their LGBTQIA+ peers.
If you want to know more about IDAHOBIT, you can check the this website https://www.minus18.org.au/

PBL - Positive Behaviour for Learning
PBL – Positive Behaviour for Learning is our Whole School Approach for behaviour.
The fundamental philosophy of PBL is that we cannot assume that our students know how to behave at school if they haven’t been explicitly taught the expectations required.
Each fortnight our PBL team meets to analyse the behaviour data to determine what needs to be taught or revised in regard to our school expectations. These expectations are then taught as focus skills in the classroom and on parade. The language is used by all staff and the posters are displayed around the school and on our school’s Facebook page so that they can be reiterated at home. This week our focus skill is ‘Respect Other People’s Personal Space’. This is an important message to share with our students as we are seeing a slight rise in wrestling games at school that don’t fit with our school rule to ‘Be Safe’
Pop into parade on Monday from 2:15pm to see our new TBSS Breaking News segment thanks to the Mr Terry’s Drama Extension team. Each week the news team helps our students understand our Behaviour Focus.

Around the classroom
5D Mr McClafferty and the students were fully engaged in their maths unpacking the properties of shapes.

High precision focus, high precision learning.
Year 1/2 students in Miss Shouldice's class are prioritising letter formation to support their handwriting.

Hands on healthy maths. Miss Davies 2A.
What an outstanding way to demonstrate fractions.

NAPLAN testing online
The online testing model progressively adjusts to student's ability as they answer questions unlike the original paper based tests.
Hint: download a typing tutor on your device or laptop at home and set as a homework task. This will support students right through their schooling journey and leave them with a lifelong skill

Ms Arthur and 2F students learning high jump techniques.
We are so lucky to have such expansive undercover areas during the wet weather.

The IEC class had a special visit from ‘Boots’ yesterday. Boots is a companion/support dog who belongs to a member of the IEC class. Boots is very well trained and the students enjoyed learning about how to care for a dog and also loved giving Boots lot of cuddles!

2022 Premier’s Reading Challenge
Dear parents/carers
I am delighted to invite all Trinity Beach State School students to join in the 2022 Premier’s

The PRC is not a competition but a way to encourage students to develop a love of reading for life.
Students are encouraged to select a range of fiction and non-fiction books suited to their reading
ability and record books read during the reading period, between 9 May to 26 August. Enclosed is a
reader record form.
To complete the challenge:
• Prep to Year 2 must read or experience at least 20 books
• Years 3 and 4 must read at least 20 books
• Years 5 to 9 must read at least 15 books.
Experiencing books can include shared reading, listening to stories, or reading picture books. The
aim for the 2022 challenge is to engage more students to read than ever before! Last year saw more than 168,000 children from around the state participate.
Key dates
9 May – 26 August Reading period for Prep to Year 9 students
29 August Student reader record forms submitted to teacher
31 October to 11 November Premier's Reading Challenge celebration weeks

Well done to all of the students who competed on the day and showed great sportsmanship. Congratulations to Jacob M who finished in 3rd position and Willow S in 4th position, who both have qualified to compete at the Peninsula Cross Country trials later this week.

School of Origin Series update
On Thursday 5 May our Year 5/6 Rugby League team played a second game in this season's School of Origin Series against Holy Cross School. It was a brilliant game of footy, with both sides neck and neck until the final minutes when Holy Cross scored a few tries to win 8 - 5. The ref from NRL said it was the "best game of school footy he had ever seen!" Our players were outstanding and we were so proud of their sportsmanship and skill. We look forward to the next series which starts in Term 4 and our Year 5 players will be in the best position for another round! Thanks coach Mr Paterson for giving up your own time to train the team.
Special mention to Savannah (Year 5) for selection as TBSS best player by the ref and Jake (Year 6) for Player of the Match TBSS.

Year 5 - Nigel, Jara, Harry, Kaleb, Savannah and Zac.
Year 6 - Lincoln, Jacob, Alunzu, Toby, Graydee, Kane, Byron C, Byron A, Rhys, Tommi, Jake, Memphis and Atticus.
