Year 4 Term 3 Overview 2022
Term overview
Welcome to Term 3!
Welcome back to school. We hope you all enjoyed the holidays with your children. It has been wonderful to see the children back safe and sound and happy for a new term. Thank you for your continued support, as education is a team effort!
Our specialist classes include 3 specialist lessons per week. Classes vary across the year level, but consist of a mixture of HPE, Music, Drama, LOTE and Technology.
Our Math, Science, English and HASS programs will continue to follow the Australian Curriculum for Grade 4. Term 3 is a 10-week term.
This term, in weeks 9 and 10, our classes will also be taking swimming lessons. Further information will be sent out closer to the date.
We would also like to take the opportunity to remind everyone of our school rules. Be safe. Be Respectful. Be a learner. It would be great if you could spend some time with your child to discuss these rules and their impacts in a classroom.
Incidences at lunchtime need to be reported to a duty teacher for the problem to be solved properly. If your child is experiencing challenges on the playground please send an email to their class teacher so we are aware. If you have any questions or concerns please contact your child’s teacher as a first point of contact.
Thanks again for your support. The Year 4 team is looking forward to continue working with you and your children.

Reading / Spelling
Our school is implementing a systematic synthetic phonics approach that has a teaching sequence for reading and spelling which goes across the entire school. Promoting Literacy Development or PLD for short, provides teachers with an innovative, evidence-based approach to literacy and advocates that children’s literacy and learning outcomes are maximized when the areas of literacy, oral language and movement & motor skills are simultaneously targeted. With this change, we will be working with decodable texts instead of predictable texts in the teaching of reading.
Due to this change, home reading will look different as well. Students may come home with games with high frequency words or sounds instead of home readers. This is reading practice. Please be assured that students will be getting a much higher level of reading mileage at school every day.
English
In English this term students in grade 4 will be exploring persuasive texts. They will explain how language features, images and vocab are used to engage the interest of audiences and be describing literal and implied meaning connecting ideas in texts. Students will also learn that persuasive advertising has different text structures depending on purpose and context. Speaking and listening skills will also be developed as students participate in giving a speech and being a part of an audience.

Students’ understanding of soils, rocks and landscapes and how they change over time is developed through hands-on activities and student-planned investigations. Students also investigate factors that affect the erosion of soils. In the Plants in action unit students will develop a sense of wonder and appreciation of plants as they investigate the processes of pollination and germination, students sequence the life cycle of a bean. They consider a plant’s life cycle and environmental conditions that plants need for growth.
HASS
This Semester in HASS, students will be learning about the environmental features of different landscapes and the effects of human impacts on the environment. They will explore the difference between sustainable and unsustainable practices and the waste management process to propose a more sustainable use of a waste item.
