Year 4 Term 4 Overview 2022
Term overview
Welcome to Term 4 of Year 4 at Trinity Beach State School. We are very happy to see so much excitement and positivity from the school community in the first weeks after holidays.
The Year 4 teachers would like to extend our appreciation to families in their support of the delivery of the Swimming Program at the end of Term 3 as well as our excursion to the waste management facility in the first week back. We hope our students enjoyed these activities as much as we did.
It is very important for students to attend school every day. If your child is absent, please contact the office to let them know. Students must not attend school if they are unwell.
Just a reminder…No hat, no play! Please ensure your child has a drink bottle each day. Please also ensure that your child has appropriate stationary equipment for the day: a pencil, red pen, rubber, and ruler are essentials that make it easier to be prideful of our schoolwork.
To build a sense of belonging, pride and respect, students are expected to wear their full school uniform -
- No jumpers with hoods or jumpers that are not a dark blue
- No jewellery with exception to watches, medical alert bracelets or religious/ memorial references.
- No knee-high colourful socks (Black, blue, white only)
- School Hats to be worn.
This semester we are continuing our school wide Social and Emotional Program called You Can Do It! Students will continue to learn about five different social-emotional skills. These skills are called our five keys to success – persistence, organisation, getting along, resilience and confidence.
Attendance
How to report an absence:
- Email attendance@trinitybeachss.eq.edu.au or
- Call the school's absence line on 4057 1444, then press #1 and don't forget to leave a reason why your child/children are away, or
- Send a note to the classroom teacher on their return
Our schools attendance target is 95%

Reading / Spelling
Our school is implementing a systematic synthetic phonics approach that has a teaching sequence for reading and spelling which goes across the entire school. Promoting Literacy Development or PLD for short, provides teachers with an innovative, evidence-based approach to literacy and advocates that children’s literacy and learning outcomes are maximized when the areas of literacy, oral language and movement & motor skills are simultaneously targeted. With this change, we will be working with decodable texts instead of predictable texts in the teaching of reading.
Due to this change, home reading will look different as well. Students may come home with games with high frequency words or sounds instead of home readers. This is reading practice. Please be assured that students will be getting a much higher level of reading mileage at school every day.
English
Students read a narrative (The Twits) and examine and analyse the language features and techniques used by the author. They create an extra chapter based on a trick for the narrative for an audience of their peers.
Maths
In this unit students will recognise common equivalent fractions and mixed numerals in familiar contexts. They will find fractions of a quantity. Students will make connections between fractions and decimal notations up to two places using vocabulary and organise them in order. They will locate familiar fractions and mixed numerals on a number line and convert between mixed numerals and improper fractions. Students will solve simple purchasing problems and round to the nearest 5 cent and calculate change. They will identify and explain strategies for finding unknown quantities in number sentences.
Science
In the Plants in action unit students will develop a sense of wonder and appreciation of plants as they investigate the processes of pollination and germination, students sequence the life cycle of a bean. They consider a plant’s life cycle and environmental conditions that plants need for growth.
HASS
In this unit students consider the role of local government in environmental sustainability and develop a letter to the Principal about the importance of recycling facilities at the school. Students propose a sustainable practice for waste management.
HPE
Students in year four will focus on applying strategies for working cooperatively and apply rules fairly in the game of T-Ball. They will refine their striking and fielding skills and concepts in active play and games.
Music
During this Term, students will learn the differences between: tied notes and slurs, legato and staccato, strong and weak beats, and simple and compound time. They also will practice writing simple rhythmical patterns and melodies.
Drama
‘Create a Character’
Students will develop a character through individual and group exploration, dramatic improvisation and response. They plan a character backstory and change the way they walk, talk and move. At the end of the term students participate in an improvised interview, in character, in front of their class.
Technology
The Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program is a fun, hands-on learning program delivering pleasurable food education. With strong curriculum integration and a focus on student wellbeing, collaboration and leadership, students learn to grow, harvest, prepare and share fresh, seasonal, delicious food – forming positive food habits for life.
All classes this term will take part in the creation of the garden and basic cooking/food production. The students will learn skills involved with garden and kitchen tools, kitchen and garden safety and hygiene practices. Each year level will also complete an assessment based in design and technologies curriculum as outlined in their assessment schedule.
Lote
In this unit students will use the Chinese language to explore the school experience in Chinese-speaking cultures and make connections with their own school experiences. They will engage in different texts and discuss about school experiences in Chinese. They will also explore and analyse the formation of Chinese characters and sentence structure.
