Year 5-6 News from the Deputy

This morning I had the pleasure of watching our Year 6 students perform in the Star 102 Battle of the Schools trivia competition. Trinity Beach SS hosted Dave & Inky and the crew. Our students had the opportunity to present the weather report on radio and are you Smarter than Inky? challenge. Good luck to 6C who won the trivia rounds and will now go on to compete against other schools at Harvey Norman on Saturday. They have big shoes to fill as last year’s 6C are reigning champions.
Next Thursday 10th November is our inaugural Awards Night presentation. This evening will showcase our high achieving students in a variety of fields. It is good to recognise our students who often are our quiet achievers and who do so much for our school & wider community. If you have a child attending, dress code is smart casual & a reminder that seating for families must be booked as outlined on the invitation.
Another exciting event is our Year 6 Graduation ceremony. With graduation is also transition to high school. If you have not already enrolled at Smithfield, their last enrolment session will be held on the 23rd November. Please contact the high school if you would like any further information. We already have some of our Year 6’s participating in weekly transition sessions. For the majority of our students going on to Smithfield SHS, transition day is the last Wednesday of the term – 7th December. Understandingly our students are nervous about what high school will be like and the unknown routines and expectations. Transition day is an opportunity to meet their teachers, learn what classes they will have and also how to read a timetable.
As we move into the final weeks of the term, teachers will be encouraging students to stay focused and approach their assessments with resilience and confidence. I have been walking through classrooms and seeing all the wonderful learning that is happening. I see the evidence daily that Trinity Beach State School is a brilliant school!
Kind regards
Leanne Bell
Deputy Years 5 & 6

Stay and Plays
It has been so wonderful to meet our 2023 preps during the stay and play opportunities that we had been running for the last 4 weeks. So many keen and enthusiastic little people ready to start their schooling adventure at our amazing school! We are still accepting enrolments for 2023 and highly encourage all families to get their paperwork in asap to ensure a smooth transition to school.
Swimming
Swimming for the P-2s starts this week. If you need any further information regarding this, please contact your child’s teacher.
Behaviours
The temperature has risen and we are close to the end of the year and we are starting to see some heightened behaviours both in the classroom and in the playground. Please assist the school with reminders of the school rules Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be a Learner when you are having discussions with your child. Everyone has the right to a safe, respectful environment to learn and teach.
Head of Inclusive Education News

In the Inclusive Education Centre this term students are getting ready to transition to their new year levels and classes for 2023.
What does this look like in each learning phase?
Transition to Prep
Students with additional needs are supported by our Early Years Pathways Teacher, Jade Kerkhoven to transition to our school. Jade has offered small group ‘Stay and Play’ sessions and meets with families at our Explorers Playgroup. Jade works with children and their families from 0-5 to support them to join our school community.
Year Level to Year Level
Students with additional needs already at our school experience transition from their current year level to their next year level by getting to know staff and students in other classes through intentional or incidental ways and also get to know their new play areas and learning spaces. Teachers talk about 2023 and build on student learning so they are well prepared by the time school starts.
Year 6 to High School
Students in Year 6 have spent most of the year getting ready for their transition to Year 7 and high school. In Term 3, students with additional needs meet teachers and staff from Smithfield State High School and work through what to expect sessions with Year 6 IEC Teacher Lisa Croatto. In Term 4, transition visits to Smithfield State High School occur weekly and students get to put their theory from Term 3 into practice as they get to know their new learning spaces at high school.
The Department of Education has some great resources for transition for students with autism (that is a great resource for all children) including their online Transition Resource package found here https://autismhub.education.qld.gov.au/resources/online-transition-resource
If you would like support or ideas to improve transitions for your child at school please see me in the Inclusive Education Centre.
Kind regards,
Samantha Ilic
HEAD OF INCLUSIVE EDUCATION
Head of Department Curriculum Year P-6 News

In week 4 we had our first ever art expo. Our students created amazing pieces of art work with the very talented Sharon Wedel, that were displayed in our hall for everyone to see. Students created sculptures of coral reefs, abstract art and art created by coding. It was a fantastic afternoon to see our talented students work.
Following the art expo, we hosted an instrumental music information evening for our parents of students who wish to participate in our instrumental music program. Our concert band and string orchestra performed to showcase what our future musicians will have to look forward to.
In our up coming events, we have our annual carols evening at 6:30pm on Thursday the 1st of December. Make sure you come along to sing along to your favourite carols and get your chance to see Santa!
Finally, we have our Semester two report cards being emailed out Thursday week 10. In preparation for this, please ensure you have your current email address on our system. Please see the office if you need to update your contact information.
Guidance Officer News

Thank you to Dr Arno!!
Here at Trinity Beach State School, we have been very fortunate to have Dr Arno (Paediatrician) working with us for school clinics since 2019. These clinics have provided timely access to specialised medical support for a range of families, and we are so appreciative of the work that Dr Arno has done with us.
These clinics will be finishing at the end of this year, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr Arno for his support of our school, our families and our students.

Transitions – helping my child cope with changes
The end of one year (and the start of the next year) can provide many challenges for children and their families. This is especially true for students moving from Yr 6 into High School, students starting Prep, and students with additional needs.
Between now and the start of next year, you can assist your child to feel more confident with changes to their school environment by trying the following:
- Take part in any transition days / events that are offered – to build familiarity with the new setting and new staff. This greatly reduces stress for most children.
- Talk about the staff who can help them if they are finding all he changes difficult – the office staff, Guidance Officer, Deputy Principals, Head of Inclusive Education, and Inclusive Education teachers are great people to know if you need a hand!
- Remind them of the things that will remain the same – it is comforting to know that while a classroom and teacher may change, their friends will still be available to see at lunchtimes.
- For those moving on to High School, over the holidays, discuss how they will be getting to and from school. A practice ‘drive past’ to the school can ease some worries as well.
- Suggest to your child that they make a plan for Day 1 of 2023 – to meet friends in a particular area in the morning, and start their day with a smile 😊
PBL – Positive Behaviour for Learning is our Whole School Approach for behaviour
The fundamental philosophy of PBL is that we cannot assume that our students know how to behave at school if they haven’t been explicitly taught the expectations required.
Each fortnight our PBL team meets to analyse the behaviour data to determine what needs to be taught or revised in regard to our school expectations. These expectations are then taught as focus skills in the classroom and on parade. The language is used by all staff and the posters are displayed around the school and on our school’s Facebook page so that they can be reiterated at home. This week our focus skill is ‘Communicating Respectfully’.
Pop into parade on Monday from 2:15pm to see our new TBSS Breaking News segment thanks to the Mr Terry’s Drama Extension team. Each week the news team helps our students understand our Behaviour Focus.

Instrumental Music News
On the first week of term 4 a selection of the school orchestra attended the Strings Camp at Smithfield State High School.
Even with 120 students on the stage numbers are limited at this event. It gives students from remote schools as far away as Daintree and Innisfail a chance to get together in a much larger ensemble than is available in their home town. Students also get the chance to meet other players from in the region who all have in common a love for music.
The guest conductor was Loreta Fin (LMusA, AMusA, ATCL) who studied at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and was a first violinist with the Sydney Youth Orchestra. Both teachers and students were able to learn something from this widely acclaimed composer.
Students worked hard through 2 days of rehearsals and skills development and were then able to perform the new pieces for an interested audience at the end of the second day.
The event was held with much enthusiasm and both students and teachers look forward to this annual event.
Instrumental Music Information session:
Thank you to the staff, students and parents for your presentation, performance and attendance at our information evening last night.
Please express your interest in instrumental music now for 2023.
