Principal Message

A warm welcome to everyone – Ready for another thriving year!
It is with much pleasure and enthusiasm that we welcome everyone to the Trinity Beach State School family for 2023. Thank-you for the feedback about our smooth and calm start to the year. We thank-you for your continued support of our school. We are so proud of our staff who have been planning and preparing relentlessly to ensure an engaging and rigorous start to 2023. Your children are our priority.

Future Ready 2026 – Our 4 Year Strategic Plan
We are at the final iterations of our new Future Ready 2026 - 4 Year Strategic Plan. This determines our vision for the future. We thank-you for everyone’s input over the last 12 months. The final step is for community review at our next P&C Meeting. Please attend as we value your input.

School Improvement – Our Explicit Improvement Focus for 2023
Our teachers have a deep understanding of the work that will enable our students to flourish. We are very lucky to have a team of highly committed teachers across our school who continually reflect and review their work. We are maintaining the focus on inclusion and the Science of Reading for a second year. This has shown significant improvement in engagement, academic achievement of the Australian Curriculum and our NAPLAN results.

Teacher Meet & Greet – Connecting you with our Team
Please join our us by visiting your child’s teacher next week Tuesday 7 February from 3.15pm – 4.15pm in their classroom. Our classes will be open and we have sent you our Year Level Overviews via an email link (Schoolzine). If you require more detailed information specific to your child’s education, please make an appointment as this session is an informal meet & greet.

Year 5 - 6 News from the Deputy

Year 5-6 news from the Deputy
Welcome back for the 2023 school year. I trust all our families enjoyed the festive season and were able to spend time with family and friends. I have been very impressed with how well our Year 5 and 6 students have started the school year. They are settled into classrooms and engaged in quality learning.
This year in Year 5 we welcome Ms Zeylman’s to our team. Rhonda is an experienced teacher who comes to us from Whitfield SS. Also joining our Year 5 team are Jennifer Schultz, Chey-Lee Barber-Sokolowski and Jessica O’Kane who were all part of the Year 4 team in 2022. Shannon Devlin, who has been a valuable member of our inclusive Education team, joins us in the Year 5/6 composite class. I would also like to welcome Brent Dornauf and Jocelyn Brown who have joined our Year 6 team. Brent joins us from down south and has previously taught in Cooktown, and Jocelyn joins us from Darwin. Please consider dropping into your child’s classroom during our Meet the Teacher afternoon next Tuesday to meet your teacher and see the work your child has already done.
This should be a busy term in the upper school. The Year 5 cohort head off on their boating excursions in Week 4 and 5 as part of their Science unit looking at animal adaptations whereas the Year 6 students will head up to the Tablelands for their leadership camp at Camp Paterson. Both excursions will be looking for parents to attend as volunteers. Please touch base with your child’s teacher if you are interested. Permission forms will come home in the next few days.
The Tropical North Learning Academy partnership program - Young Scholars has already begun and the sports academies will kick off in Week 4. Students have received their letters of offer and permission forms. If your child was not selected this time, another round of offers occur at the beginning of semester 2. A parent information session will be held later in the term which will explain the selection process, criteria and the electives the students engage with at Smithfield SHS.
Kind regards
Leanne Bell
Deputy Years 5 & 6
Year 3 - 4 News from the Deputy

Hello and welcome back for 2023,
My name is Emma Taylor, I am the Deputy Principal for years 3 and 4. This is my third year at Trinity Beach State School and I look forward to another year working with my exceptional teaching team and your wonderful children.
This year we look forward to supporting your children with their academic progress through the Australian Curriculum, supporting their reading development through our ‘Every Student Reading, Every Student Succeeding’ improvement agenda and developing their social and emotional wellbeing through our supportive classrooms and specialised programs.
My tips for the start of the year: Lots of sleep, your children have had a long holiday and the mental load of a full day at school will exhaust them which may result in some frustrating behaviours at home. Try to engage in positive conversations about school. Rather than asking ‘how was your day?’ try for a more detailed approach ‘what was the best thing about today?’ ‘teach me one thing you learned today?’. Throughout their schooling children will face challenges when communicating with peers as they are developing these skills for life. They will make friends and lose friends. The more emotive we are as parents the more they will focus on the uncomfortable minutes of the day rather than the smiles. Always acknowledge the frustration, ask clarifying questions to show you are listening and confirm the next step or plan if there is a reoccurrence. If it is an ongoing issue share these details with the classroom teacher.
Stay tuned with our active FaceBook page to keep up to date with school events and classroom snapshots. We look forward to seeing lots of you next week during our ‘parent meet and greet’ next Tuesday (week 3) between 3:15pm and 4:15pm.
Trinity Beach State School is a brilliant School and I know that 2023 will be a great year for your child’s education.
Kind regards,
Emma Taylor
Prep - Year 2 News from the Deputy

Welcome back
It is so exciting to be back and start 2023!
What a wonderful start to the 2023 school year! Welcome back to all our Trinity Beach State School families and all of our new families including our Prep families.
We had such a smooth start for our Prep students and I want to thank all our families for engaging in the transition process last year. Your engagement has made sure that our Prep students were confident and happy on their first day and set them up for a successful year.
The transition back to school can be a tricky time after such a long break. Enjoying time at home and engaging in favourite activities such as video games, outdoor activities can make it difficult for our students to readjust to the structure of classrooms and school life. Remember that as each day passes, our students will settle back into daily school life. Please remain positive in your discussions with your children as this will set them up for a wonderful school year.
Our Prep to year 2 teachers are a team of highly skilled and experienced teachers that have a great amount of expertise in the area of early childhood education. These foundational years are so important for academic and social emotional success for all our students. It is imperative that your child attends every day unless unwell to ensure that no key learning opportunities are missed. It is very difficult for teachers to catch students up when they miss too much school and students can also feel very overwhelmed when they don’t understand a concept and need to have condensed learning opportunity to learn a concept missed. Every day counts! Days off here and there add up! Please avoid trips away during the school term.
Our amazing P-2 team for 2023 is
PA- Kaileh Cavenett and Tracey Bin Tahal
PB- Lauren Shouldice and Nadine Butler
PC- Darelle Anderson and Rachel Pol
PD- Angela Buckley and Janelle Thorn
PM- Gayle Kyle and Sue Muir
1A- Christine Abood and Kate Kay
1B- Shannon Hanley
1C- Sharyn Yeabsley
1D- Kerry-Ann Wright (Welcome back!)
1/2MA- Kat Davies
1/2MB- Jac Williams
2A- Tanara Jackson
2B- Nicky Passfield
2C- Renee Harper
2D- Nicola Rasheed
2E- Kristie Pittorino
I would like to welcome Ms Rachel Black to our P-2 team as the Head of Department-Curriculum for Prep- 2. Ms Black is new to our school and is very excited to work with our teachers and students and to be a part of the Trinity Beach State School Team. If you see Ms Black around please say hi.

HOSES Contribution Newsletter Week 2, Term 1, 2023
Thank you all for preparing your children so well for the 2023 school year – despite many challenges with weather and access around the school students are back at school ready to learn which is wonderful to see!
I’m often asked what we mean when we talk about inclusion at school. The Inclusive Education Policy outlines the Department of Education’s commitment to continuing the journey towards a more inclusive education system.
Inclusive education means that students can access and fully participate in learning, alongside their similar-aged peers, supported by reasonable adjustments and teaching strategies tailored to meet their individual needs. Inclusive education encompasses all aspects of school life, and is supported by culture, policies and every day practices.
Inclusion differs from integration where students are placed with their similar aged peers but adjustments are not made to meet their individual needs. This limits their ability to full access or participate in learning. Integration is not necessarily a step toward inclusion.
Reasonable adjustments are measures or actions taken to assist a student with disability to participate in education on the same basis as other students. Examples of reasonable adjustments are modifications to the classroom or school environment, personalised learning materials and equipment, personal care supports and planning to meet individual student needs.
If you would like to learn more about inclusion at our school or discuss reasonable adjustments for your student, please make a time to see me in the Inclusive Education Centre.
Year 3-6 Curriculum News from the Head of Deparment

I’d like to begin on welcoming everyone to Trinity Beach 2023. I hope you all had a fantastic break over the Christmas period.
For those who don’t know me, my name is Chris Paterson. I have been teaching at Trinity Beach since 2017 and in term 4 last year, moved into Head of Curriculum role.
This year as Head of Curriculum (3-6), my main work will involve working with our great teachers in year 3-6 to assist in their planning and delivery of the Australian Curriculum. I will also be coaching teachers in the teaching of reading and co-ordinating our amazing team of specialist teachers and the many events that they run within our school. All of this work will be centred around providing the best possible education for our students.
2023 is going to be a great year at Trinity Beach State School!
Prep - Year 2 Curriculum News from the Head of Department

My name is Rachel Black and I am the Head of Department (Curriculum) for Prep to Year 2. I have moved from Brisbane to work here at Trinity Beach and am excited to be a part of this wonderful school. An important part of my role will see me support teachers in the implementation and planning of the Australian Curriculum and our whole school approach to the teaching of reading.
I am looking forward to being a part of the TBSS community and working alongside the amazing teachers and teacher aides we have here to ensure we continue to provide the best educational outcomes for our students. If you see me around, please don’t hesitate to say hello.
Guidance Officer News

For those parents and families who don’t know me yet, my name is Jenny Ferguson and my office is in the Library. I work at Trinity Beach State School every day, and can provide support or referrals for support to families who need assistance.
I can usually be easily recognised by my bright pink hair! Your kids will have seen me around the school, even if they have not met me yet.
I have had a lot of queries from parents recently about how to assist their child to deal with anxiety. It seems that this is a common issue for a growing number of children in our school, and across Australia.
If you are concerned about your child showing signs of anxiety, here are some things you can do:
- Talk with your child and see if there is something they are worried about. Sometimes it can be something very specific, and if that is changed, their anxiety / worries reduce very quickly.
- Talk with your child’s teacher to let them know you are seeing some signs that your child may be anxious / worried. This will help you to identify whether your child’s concerns are just being shown at home, or also on display at school.
- Talk to your GP about your concerns – doctors have excellent training in recognising and helping to treat mental health issues. Anxiety is very common in children and most GPs are wonderful at suggesting some ways to assist.
- Talk to the Deputy Principal or myself (Guidance Officer) to share your worries. We can help to keep an eye on your child, and offer them additional support, if it is needed.
There are also some amazing websites with more information on anxiety. Here a few to consider:
https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/anxiety-in-children
https://healthyfamilies.beyondblue.org.au/age-6-12/mental-health-conditions-in-children/anxiety
https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/health/conditionsandtreatments/fear-and-anxiety-children
If you have significant concerns about your child, you’re best to start with a GP referral. If you need a hand to organise this, I’m happy to assist. I can be contacted on jferg53@eq.edu.au or via my office phone which is 4057 1421.
PBL - Positive Behaviour for Learning is our Whole School Approach for behaviour
The fundamental philosophy of PBL is that we cannot assume that our students know how to behave at school if they haven’t been explicitly taught the expectations required. Each fortnight our PBL team meets to analyse the behaviour data to determine what needs to be taught or revised in regard to our school expectations. These expectations are then taught as focus skills in the classroom and on parade. The language is used by all staff and the posters are displayed around the school and on our school’s FaceBook page so that they can be reiterated at home. This week our focus skill is ‘Transitions’.

Exciting times last week in one of our composite classes with the students in 3/4A completing a Math icebreaker activity.
Together they were creating and comparing 3- and 4-digit numbers. During this time, students were able to get to know each other by working/learning together in pairs. Well done and welcome to Mrs Rivera.

During Maths rotations, Prep A students practised forming numerals correctly, became experts on the number 3 and sorted 2D shaped by several different attributes. We are so proud of our littlest learners.
