Term overview
We would like to welcome our returning and new families to Trinity Beach State School for 2023.
We hope you all had a safe and happy holiday and look forward to a very productive and successful 10 week term, ending Friday, 31st March. This newsletter is to provide you with the information which will support you and your child’s journey throughout 2023.
Our year three teaching team consists of 3A Mrs Alison Simpson-Taylor, 3B Ms Christina Stanfield Roche, 3C Mr Chris Clair, 3D Mr Jacob Neill, 3E Ms Kate Archer, 3F Mrs Timena Rhodes (Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri) and Mrs Ariel Ballou (Wed). Mrs Ariel Ballou and Mrs Jude Doherty work in our IEC Unit and provide support to students.
Our Math, Science, English and HASS programs are aligned to the Australian Curriculum for year three. We have specialist classes provided by our specialist teachers, these are Music, HPE, Technology and Drama. Classes will rotate between Drama and Technology, however, Music and HPE are taught each term.
NAPLAN
NAPLAN has been moved to Term 1 this year and will run on through the 15th of March to the 27th of March. We encourage all students to participate and to try their best. Year 3 will complete writing task using paper and pencil. All other components will be completed online. There will be more information about NAPLAN sent out over the coming weeks. If you have any concerns regarding NAPLAN, please see your child’s teacher.
Organisation
It is imperative that students are organised and that they have all equipment needed each day to be the best learners they can be. Students are required to be in class and unpacked by 8:50am so they are ready to start by 9am. An early bedtime routine (scientists recommend 10-11 hours’ sleep per night) and a healthy diet will assist your child in performing fully while at school.
Hats and Shoes
Broad-brimmed or bucket hats and shoes are compulsory at Trinity Beach State School, so please ensure your child always has these and that they are clearly named.
Equipment & Materials
Please check with your child regularly throughout the year to ensure they have everything they need for school, particularly consumables and easily misplaced items such as pencils, erasers, glue, rulers etc.
Religious Instruction
Religion classes will commence week 5. During this time, students who do not participate in Religious Instruction, will be doing a values lesson. Please contact the front office if you wish to change your child’s religious preference.
Personal Items
Departmental guidelines stipulate that to help maintain hygiene regulations, all students are to avoid bringing personal items to school. These include toys and other items that may result in other students sharing contact with the personal items.
Homework - Reading
At Trinity Beach State School, regular Home Reading is a priority. Please read with them during the week. Children will be encouraged to borrow books from our Library for enjoyment and relaxation.
Attendance
How to report an absence:
- Email attendance@trinitybeachss.eq.edu.au or

- Send a note to the classroom teacher on their return
Our schools attendance target is 95%

Qparents
QParents is here
Great news: Trinity Beach SS provides our parent community with the opportunity to register for QParents.
We will be sending out invitations for parents to register for QParents next week.
QParents won’t replace the traditional ways you communicate with our school, but it will provide another way to communicate with us.
More information about QParents can be found at https://qparents.qld.edu.au/#/about
English
Persuasive Letter
Students will write a persuasive letter to their school Principal stating their opinion on getting a swimming pool at school and present their argument to their peers.
Reading / spelling
Our school is continueing to use a systematic synthetic phonics approach that has a teaching sequence for reading and spelling which goes across the entire school. This provides teachers with an innovative, evidence-based approach to literacy and advocates that children’s literacy and learning outcomes are maximized when the areas of literacy, oral language and movement & motor skills are simultaneously targeted. With this change, we will be working with decodable texts instead of predictable texts in the teaching of reading.
Maths
Representing adding and subtracting numbers
Students recognise, represent and order numbers, recognise the connection between addition and subtraction, and add and subtract numbers.
Conducting a Chance Experiment
Students collect and interpret data from simple chance experiments.
Science
Night and Day (Earth and Space Sciences)
What causes night and day? The rising of the Sun and the Moon are daily reminders of the awe and wonder, beauty and power of the universe. Studying the relationships between the Sun, Earth and Moon helps us understand how we experience day and night on Earth. It also helps us understand directions in terms of North, South, East and West, how time is based on the apparent movement of the Sun across the sky and how time can be determined using a sundial.
HASS
Our Unique Communities
In this unit students identify individuals, events and aspects of the past that have significance in the present. Identify and describe aspects of their community that have changed and remained the same over time. Explain how and why people participate in and contribute to their communities. Identify a point of view about the importance of different celebrations and commemorations to different groups.
Homework
Reading - At Trinity Beach State School, regular Home Reading is a priority. Please read with them during the week. Children will be encouraged to borrow books from our Library for enjoyment and relaxation.
IEC
In addition to supporting the children within the classroom in the IEC we are also establishing a positive classroom atmosphere.
Within our small groups (‘Social Skills’) we are revising the particular ‘focus skill’ each week and ensuring we all understand what the expectations are.
In their small groups the children are becoming responsible, resilient students and we all respect and support each other.
HPE
In PE, students in year three will develop the fundamental movement skills to play the sport of basketball. They will learn how to dribble with one hand, shoot and pass a ball using a variety of passes. In Health, students identify influences that strengthen identities. They investigate how emotional responses vary and how to interact positively with others.
Music
In this unit, students will appreciate and analyse the music of Mussorgsky. Through this, they will learn about dynamics, legato and staccato, tied notes and slurs. They will consolidate their knowledge of C-Pentatonic scale. They will learn about string instruments in an orchestra. Students will be introduced to the ABA musical form.
Visual Arts
This term in Visual Arts, year 3 students will be exposed to each of the seven basic elements of art. Elements of art are stylistic features that are included in artwork to help the artist communicate. These elements are line, shape, colour, texture, value space and form. Students view various famous artworks that have each element depicted in the artwork. Students will use and experiment with different materials, techniques, technologies and processes to make artworks using the basic elements of art.
Technology
In Technologies, students in year three will apply their knowledge of heat transfer to plan and create an insulator for a water bottle. Students collect data throughout the investigation, presenting results as a webpage.
Drama
Our Special Place
Students working in groups create, present and respond to a drama story that expresses their ideas and feelings about their special place in the school.
