Year 5/6 Term 1 Overview 2023
Term overview
Welcome everyone to the first term of 2023. I am very excited about the opportunities on offer to the students this year and the huge support team they have around them:
Year 6. Mr. Jay Dumbleton (6A), Ms. Kaylene Collins (6B), Miss Kirsten Apelgren (6C), Miss Jocelyn Brown (6D), Mr. Brent Dornauf (6E), Ms. Melanie Wilton (6F), Miss Shannon Devlin (5/6A), Mrs Rhonda Zeylmans (5A), Mrs. Sonya Ezzy (5B), Ms. Jess O’Kane (5C), Ms. Chey-Lee Barber-Sokolowski (5D), Ms Jennifer Schultz (5E).
As members of the Senior School, expectations are high for our Seniors to lead by example and engage with the many opportunities on offer to them. We are very lucky within the 5.6 Composite class to already have a number of Young Scholars, Sports Academy Representatives and Performing Arts leaders, I look forward to seeing other students challenge themselves this year to step out of their comfort zone and into opportunity and leadership.
Whether in a defined leadership role or simply out in the school community, our junior students look to, and model from our Seniors. This is one reason why it is important to ensure they are consistently demonstrating our school expectations and leading by example. These expectations include arriving at school on time, in the correct uniform, organised and ready to learn.
The assessment schedule for Term 1 is included in this outline (see table below) and provides insight into what topics your child is covering and the linked assessment measures. Please use this as a prompt to chat to your child throughout the term to check in on their learning.

QParents
QParents is here
Great news: Trinity Beach SS provides our parent community with the opportunity to register for QParents.
We will be sending out invitations for parents to register for QParents next week.
QParents won’t replace the traditional ways you communicate with our school, but it will provide another way to communicate with us.
More information about QParents can be found at https://qparents.qld.edu.au/#/about

Reading / Spelling
Our school uses a systematic synthetic phonics approach that has a teaching sequence for reading and spelling which goes across the entire school. Promoting Literacy Development or PLD for short, provides teachers with an innovative, evidence-based approach to literacy and advocates that children’s literacy and learning outcomes are maximized when the areas of literacy, oral language and movement & motor skills are simultaneously targeted. With this change, we will be working with decodable texts instead of predictable texts in the teaching of reading.
Due to this change, home reading will look different as well. Students may come home with games with high frequency words or sounds instead of home readers. This is reading practice. Please be assured that students will be getting a much higher level of reading mileage at school every day.
English
Unit 1 is Narrative focused with students developing their descriptive writing skills through the creation of short stories. Students will begin by engaging with the text “Deltora Quest” by Emily Rodda, identifying and analysing the writing, features and literary elements of a narrative. As students explore and pull-apart the novel, they will begin to create their own narratives, working to intentionally use the features and literary devices they have analysed from the text in their own writing. This unit encompasses the development of students’ intentional vocabulary use, their ability to build tension within a plot as well as their ability to create and develop characters and setting throughout their narrative.
Maths
In Unit 1, students will explore the relationship between Fractions, Decimals and Percentages. They will continue patterns through adding and subtracting decimals and fractions with the same and related denominators. Students will use number lines to order and show the connection between fractions, decimals and percentages, learning to represent the same value multiple ways. Students will work to calculate simple fractions of a quantity and learn to multiply decimal numbers.
In Unit 2, students will engage in rich, hands-on exploration and assessment examining mapping, shape and angles. Students will consolidate their use of alphanumeric grids and be introduced to Cartesian Planes, using these reference systems to locate set points. They will construct and measure different angles, categorising angles and measuring with a protractor. Students will learn to use the properties of shapes and angles to solve problems. Within the unit students will connect three-dimensional objects with their two-dimensional representations, and practice constructing Prisms & Pyramids. They will learn to describe transformations of 2D shapes as well as combinations of transformations.
Science
In Unit 1 students are investigating the connection between river and reef. Students will examine the creatures of these habitats, developing knowledge of their physical and behavioural adaptations and how these adaptations support survival. They will also explore the environmental challenges facing these animals and the impacts of environmental change on the habitats, behaviours and life cycles of the creatures from ‘River to Reef’.
HASS
This Australian History Unit explores the significant events, figures and ideas of the 1800s-1900s and examines their impact on the people of time and today. Students will examine a crucial time period beginning with Early Inland Explorers, through the Gold Rush era and into Federation and the development of the Australian Constitution. Students will explore and discuss what has changed, what has stayed the same and the impacts of key events & figures on life, both then and now on various cultural and minority groups. This investigation unit will support students to develop research skills, learning to develop appropriate questions to frame an investigation; locate, collect and interpret information from primary sources; and sequence information about events and the lives of individuals in chronological order.
.
HPE
In PE, students in year five will develop the fundamental movement skills to play the sport of soccer. They will learn how to dribble, trap a ball, pass, score and improve their positioning on the field. In Health, students will describe their own and others’ contributions to health and wellbeing. They access and interpret health information and apply problem-solving skills to enhance their own and others’ health and wellbeing.
Music
In this unit, students will learn about C major scale. They will practice singing and playing this scale using instruments. They will be introduced to the Note Value chart and correct terminology for each note. They will learn about woodwind instruments and major and minor modes. They will consolidate their knowledge of known rhythmical elements, known musical forms, anacrusis and dynamics.
LOTE
In this unit, students will engage with a range of texts about personal identity. They will learn to introduce personal and family names, and to identify the meaning in names. They will also learn to summarise key points and produce short informative texts that include names and details of themselves. Moreover, they will demonstrate fundamental Chinese .
