Principal Message
Year 5 - 6 News from the Deputy

Welcome to Week 3.
Last week we commemorated ANZAC day with a very moving service at the school. I am always proud to see how our Year 6 school leaders conduct themselves when running these events. It is good to know that our leaders will move into high school able to speak articulately in front of an audience and not only participate, but run formal events with a sense of purpose and confidence.
Swimming begins this week for some classes. All Year 6 classes complete a two-week swimming block. Consent forms will have been emailed home or sent through the QParents app. Young Scholars will still run during this time.
Over the last couple of weeks, we have had a focus on our school rule ‘Being Respectful’. Our focus skill is ‘Following Instructions’. We have wonderful staff who put our students first and demonstrate respect. The senior school can be difficult to navigate for some of our students as the expectations to be a good role model become higher and students start looking towards high school. I like to encourage our students to do the right thing, even if no one is looking, and that kind and respectful words & actions cost nothing.
Kind regards
Leanne Bell

Year 3 - 4 News from the Deputy

What a great start to Term 2.
Our focus is embedding our school wide classroom expectations in every classroom across years 3 and 4. In order for every student to be learning and achieving, teachers are to teach to expected behaviours and reinforce every day.

Look at these examples of amazing bookwork in our classes!
Thanks to: Arav 3B, Karly 3A, TJ 3C, Penny and Madeleine 3F, Liliana and Alex 4D, Jaden, Frankie and Sumalee 4A, Francesca, Finn and Alexis 3E.

Thank you to students, staff and parents for your support over the past term. I am excited to let you know that I will be taking up an acting principal position from Wednesday the 3rd of May at Gordonvale State School for a period of 10 weeks. Ms Brooke Carmody will be replacing me during this period.
I’m really looking forward to this opportunity to work with our 3/4 students. I previously worked at TBSS for 7 years prior to taking on a Deputy Principal position at Mareeba SS. I am excited to be back and look forward to getting to know students and families over the next 10 weeks.
Prep - Year 2 News from the Deputy

Welcome back to term 2!
Thank you to all parents and carers for making school a priority and ensuring all our students are at school every day. I can not say it enough times but Every Day Counts.
This term I am also adding another phrase of Every Minute Counts. Every day we have a large number of our P-2 students arriving late to school. School starts at 8.55am and for many of our classes, important lessons such as guided reading, spelling, Core English work as well as specialist lessons. It is so important that students do not miss these lessons and yes, every minute counts!
Enrolments now open
Enrolments are now being accepted for Prep 2024 along with Expressions of Interest for our Montessori program. If you have a young person born between 1 July 2018 and 30 June 2019 they are eligible for Prep in 2024. Enrolment packages can be collected through the office or online at our school website.
Swimming
The first round of intensive swimming begins this week. Please make sure your child has returned their permission and payment at the office and has their swimming gear with them every day. Thank you to the P and C for their support in keeping the cost down for this important program.
Head of Inclusive Education News

Welcome back! It’s great to see so many smiling faces at school and to see so many children return to school after the holiday break.
Now we are into Term 2, school staff start to think about transition for all students, but particularly those who will be starting Prep or Year 7 in 2024.
The Autism Hub and Reading Centre has some great resources to support transition which are useful for all children with or without additional needs. If you have a younger child starting Prep in 2024, you might like to check out the online transition resource below:

The following tip sheets and templates can help prepare your child for school:
- Tips for creating a calendar countdown (DOC, 513KB)
- My calendar countdown to Prep template (DOC, 177KB)
- Tips for developing routines and daily schedules at home (DOC, 479KB)
- An introduction to sensory processing for parents (DOC, 443KB)
- Tips for developing self care skills (DOC, 449KB)
- Tips for school uniforms (DOC, 436KB)
- Tips for travelling to and from school (DOC, 432KB)
- Tips for outside school hours care (DOC, 428KB)
- Tips for talking to other parents and children about ASD (DOC, 415KB)
Families of students in Year 6 who will transition to Year 7 in 2024 will find the resource below very useful. It contains links to the Community Resource Unit resources and suggests a sample approach in planning for transition.

While many resources note a specific disability, many of these resources are suitable for use for children with and without additional needs.
If you would like to learn more about transition and inclusion at our school or discuss reasonable adjustments for your child, please make a time to see me in the Inclusive Education Centre.

PBL - Positive Behaviour for Learning is our Whole School Approach for behaviour
Our ‘deliberate’ approach to intentionally teaching focus expectations at our school is seeing significant results. This is achieved weekly at full school parade through student made videos from Trinity TV, role plays and visuals. This is also taught within all of our classrooms on a weekly basis.
The fundamental philosophy of PBL is that we cannot assume that our students know how to behave at school if they haven’t been explicitly taught the expectations required.
Each fortnight our PBL team meets to analyse the behaviour data to determine what needs to be taught or revised in regard to our school expectations. These expectations are then taught as focus skills in the classroom and on parade. The language is used by all staff and the posters are displayed around the school and on our school’s Facebook page so that they can be reiterated at home.
Last week our focus skill was 'Play in the Correct Area'. This is an important message to share with our students as we are seeing a slight rise in wrestling games at school that don’t fit with our school rule to ‘Be Safe’
This weeks focus skill is 'Follow Directions'. Our school wide expectations in both classroom and playground environments to ensure safety, learning and respect.

Around the Classroom
End of term math activity 5D
Each student in 5D was given $1,000,000 to spend as they wished! The rules were simple: your total MUST be $1,000,000, you must buy more than 11 items and you may not buy more than one of the same items.
The problem solving has been spectacular to say the least!

Visual Arts - Year 3 artwork showing the element of Space and one point perspective.

Strong engagement in learning across the classes with our Year 1 students. Students are using a series of hand gestures to count the syllables, manipulating words and segmenting word sounds to unpack their spelling and reading skills. We are super proud of our students and the work our teachers are achieving to support them.

Mrs Graham’s Visual Arts students are producing beautifully detailed art. Visual Arst is a Specialist subject offered in 2023 at TBSS. Watch the Administration building entrance display board for updates of our student’s outstanding Visual Arts. Thank you Mrs Graham for supporting our learners with their creativity.

Year 2 students continue to rigorously engage in our Science of Reading focus. Trinity Beach State School has hosted 5 visiting schools in recent months to demonstrate the work our teachers are conducting with our students. Our improvement data is tracking positively.
Thank you for the continued support from our P&C Association for purchasing resources to support reading within our school.

We have a fun day planned in Visual Arts with Mrs Graham today. The year 3 are in for a treat. Watch this space for the finished project!

In the Playground
Our new Covered Outdoor Area was in full swing as it is open for play. There was a great deal of excitement in the air as the Year 3 & 4 students used this new space. A big thank you to the Department of Education and the Queensland Government for this magnificent addition to our school.

New e-scooter rules and fines
New e-scooter rules and fines
New rules and increased fines have been introduced for riders of e-scooters, eskateboards and similar devices that aim to make riders and everyone they interact with safer.
Visit Streetsmarts Qld for a quick and easy to understand listing of the new and existing rules, including:
• Lower speed limits of 12km/h on footpaths and shared paths, and 25km/h max elsewhere unless signed otherwise.
• Increased fines for mobile phone use ($1078).
• Increased fines for speeding and riding on prohibited roads.
• Mandatory helmets (bicycle or motorcycle) and bells for devices with handlebars.
• Age limits:
o Only those aged 16+ can ride e-scooters and e-skateboards.
o 12-15-year-olds can only ride with adult supervision. Adult supervisors must have close direct oversight of the juvenile PMD rider at all times to provide direction, guidance and potential intervention.
o Primary school aged children, under 12 years, shouldn't be riding escooters or e-skateboards. They can ride low powered electric scooters, which have a maximum speed of 10 km/h or less and are powered by a small electric motor capable of producing 200W or less. These are considered wheeled recreational devices and have a separate set of rules to PMDs. More information is available on the Department of Transport and Main Roads website.
• No passengers - one person only at a time per scooter.
• Where to ride:
o Paths - footpaths, shared paths, separated paths and bike paths
o Local streets (speed limit of 50km/h or less, no dividing centre line)
o On-road bike lanes (where the road speed limit is 50km/h or less, or where the lane is physically separated from the road).
The website features new videos demonstrating where you can ride e-scooters and at what speeds, as well as other helpful safety tips.
Visit StreetsmartsQld for more details.
