Year 3 Term 2, 2023 Curriculum Overview
Term overview
Welcome to Term Two … time does fly! So much has been covered this Semester and everyone has been working hard to achieve great results. It is most important that we continue doing our best to improve in every possible way.
Organisation
It is imperative that students are organised and that they have all equipment needed each day to be the best learners they can be. Students are required to be in class and unpacked by 8:55am so they are ready to start by 9am. An early bedtime routine (scientists recommend 10-11 hours’ sleep per night) and a healthy diet will assist your child in performing fully while at school.
Equipment & Materials
Please check with your child regularly throughout the year to ensure they have everything they need for school, particularly consumables and easily misplaced items such as pencils, erasers, glue, rulers etc.
Assessment and Reporting
Assessment this Term will be completed between weeks 7 and 9, ready for Semester 1 Report Cards to be emailed out in Week 10.
Attendance
Before School
We encourage parents to drop students off to school after 8:30am. If students arrive before this time, they are to sit in the COLA until the 8:30am bell.
How to report an absence:
- Email attendance@trinitybeachss.eq.edu.au or
- Call the school's absence line on 4057 1444, then press #1 and don't forget to leave a reason why your child/children are away, or
- Send a note to the classroom teacher on their return
Our schools attendance target is 95%

English
Narratives
Students listen to, view and read a novel to explore the authors’ use of descriptive language in the construction of characters. Students read an extract from the novel and answer questions using comprehension strategies to build literal and inferred meaning of the text. They write a short imaginative narrative based on a familiar theme.
Reading / spelling
We are continuing our work with our Structured Synthetic Phonics approach implemented last year. This programs includes:
Reading: Students work in guided reading groups 4 days per week, at similar levels to develop skills of comprehension, fluency and vocabulary. Students are tested at the beginning of each term/end of the term to determine their progress and new guided reading groups.
Spelling: Students work in ability groups with different goals, 4 days per week, developing their spelling skills. Students are tested at the end of each term to determine their progress and new spelling words/groups.
Maths
In this unit students apply a variety of mathematical concepts in real-life, lifelike and purely mathematical situations.
- Number and place value - Recognise the connection between addition and subtraction and solve problems using efficient strategies for multiplication. Count to and from 10 000. Recall addition and multiplication facts for single-digit numbers.
- Money and financial mathematics - count collections of coins and notes, make and match equivalent combinations, calculate change from simple transactions, solve a range of simple problems involving money.
Science
Heating Up (Physical Sciences)
Heat is important to us in many ways in our everyday lives. We use heat in practical ways, such as drying our hair, cooking our dinner and warming our water. We enjoy the feel of the Sun’s warmth on our skin on a spring day or the satisfying warmth of holding a cup of hot chocolate on a cold winter’s night.
The Heating up unit is an ideal way to link science with literacy in the classroom. It provides opportunities for students to investigate different heat sources and how heat moves from one object to another. Through hands-on activities, students investigate the difference in conductivity of materials
HASS
Our Unique Communities (continuation from last term)
In this unit students:
- Identify individuals, events and aspects of the past that have significance in the present
- Identify and describe aspects of their community that have changed and remained the same over time
- Explain how and why people participate in and contribute to their communities
- Identify a point of view about the importance of different celebrations and commemorations to different groups
- Pose questions and locate and collect information from sources, including observations to answer questions and draw simple conclusions
- Sequence information about events and the lives of individuals in chronological order
- Communicate their ideas, findings and conclusions in visual and written forms using simple discipline-specific terms.
Homework
At Trinity Beach State School, regular Home Reading is a priority. Please check your child is bringing home up to two library books per week. Please read with them during the week. Children will also be encouraged to borrow books from our Library for enjoyment and relaxation.
HPE
In PE, students in year three will continue to develop the fundamental movement skills of dribbling, passing and shooting in the sport of basketball. They will also develop their technical understanding of athletic activities. They will learn how to set targets and improve their performance in a range of running, jumping and throwing activities.
Music
In this unit, students will appreciate and analyse the music of Mussorgsky. Through this, they will learn about dynamics, legato and staccato, tied notes and slurs. They will consolidate their knowledge of C-Pentatonic scale. They will learn about string instruments in an orchestra. Students will be introduced to the ABA musical form.
Visual Art
This term in Visual Arts, year 3 students will continue to explore the seven elements of art. They will then use this knowledge to complete their very own art piece from different materials and mediums. This will communicate their ideas as an artist and wrap up our semester of art for 2023.
Drama
‘SPORTS’
This term students will develop improvisations based on sport and fitness activities.
They will sustain and build belief in roles and use drama elements to create effects like freeze frames and slow motion. Students will explore mime, gestures and postures and how they relate to and reveal character.
IEC
Our students in year 3 are off to a great start this Term!
To improve literacy skills, we've been spending time aligning our decodable readers with targeted spelling words each week and working on reading comprehension.
Our bi-weekly social skills lessons for both year levels align with our school behaviour focus. Students are role playing school-wide expectations and engaging in conversation about how to be safe, be respectful, and be a learner here at TBSS.
Our Year 3s are receiving support on narratives this term for English and are working on money, shapes and direction in Math.
Ariel Ballou (nabal2@eq.edu.au) and Jude Doherty (jmdoh0@eq.edu.au) can be contacted by email or in the Inclusive Education Centre (IEC) should you have any further questions or concerns.
