Year 5 - 6 News from the Deputy

Welcome to Week 6!
We are just past the half way mark of term and our classrooms are buzzing with activity as assessment and reporting rapidly approaches. It has been lovely going into classes this week and seeing the learning that is taking place.
I had the pleasure of reading some humorous stories 6E have been working on and watching 5E engage in their reading groups. Students from 6C have been sharing with me their learning about Federation and the significant impact Eddie Mabo and Vincent Lingiari have made to citizenship. I was also lucky to spot Ms LJ and a group of students from 5A enjoying their guided reading lesson focusing on Indigenous narratives.
We have also welcomed Mr Damien Theodore to 5E and our Year 5 teaching team this week. Mr Theodore comes to us from the Gold Coast and was previously teaching in Victoria. If you see him around please make him welcome.
I met with the teachers in our laptop classes this week and saw a snapshot of the projects and platforms students are engaging with. When I see the enthusiasm Mr Dornauf, Ms S, Mrs O’Kane and Ms Wilton have for this new way of learning at Trinity Beach, it reaffirms that we are heading in the right direction for our senior students and I look forward having more classes on board in the future.
Kind regards
Leanne Bell
Deputy Years 5 & 6
Year 3 - 4 News from the Deputy

Welcome to Week 6! Wow would you believe we’re halfway through the term already…
What a wonderful 2 weeks it’s been having the opportunity to work with the Year 3/4 students and teachers. Getting to know each of them has been an absolute pleasure and seeing the wonderful things they are capable of has been amazing! It’s been great to be in and out of classrooms observing all the exciting curriculum our Year 3/4 students get to engage with, from lego boats testing buoyancy to persuasive letters using high modal verbs, our students in years 3/4 are certainly showing off their talents!
Our teachers are busy at the moment preparing students for the upcoming assessment period. This is the time that both teachers and students get to see that all their hard work has paid off 😊
SWIMMING
Our first group of classes completed their swimming on Friday last week and our new classes began Tuesday of this week. A big congratulations to all our students swimming, there has been an abundance of positive comments regarding the respect and attentiveness of our students which makes you proud to be a part of Trinity Beach SS team.
Prep - Year 2 News from the Deputy

We are now half way through term 2. The year is moving at a rapid pace. Thank you to all families for making sure your children are at school on time everyday. As we move to the later part of the term students will be completing assessments ready for report cards which will be out at the end of week 10. I have really enjoyed dropping into classes to see the amazing learning happening. We are so fortunate to have wonderful teachers in the P-2 space (and the rest of our school) who go above and beyond to ensure the needs of all our students are being differentiated for.
Please remember Prep Enrolments for 2023 are now open. If you have a child born between 1 July 2018 and 30 June 2019, please pop into the office for an enrolment package or download from the school website.
Head of Inclusive Education News

We’re now at halfway through Term 2 and it is fantastic to see so many students settled into class routines and focussed on their learning.
In the Inclusive Education Centre this term, we continue to work with departmental therapists and advisors from our regional office to ensure every student with disability succeeds. We work together with regional staff to obtain specialist advice and recommendations to enable students to access and fully participate in learning on the same basis as other students.
Much of our student success can be attributed to the valued partnerships between school staff, parents and community organisations as we continue to identify and implement reasonable adjustments and develop plans for students with disability and additional needs at our school.
Why are we required to make reasonable adjustments?
School staff are required to make reasonable adjustments for students with disability under relevant legislation including the:
- Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA)
- Disability Standards for Education 2005 (DSE)
- Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (Qld)
- Human Rights Act 2019 (Qld) (HRA)
What is a reasonable adjustment?
The DSE requires reasonable adjustments to be made to enable students with disability to access and participate in education on the same basis as students without disability. On the same basis means that students with disability are provided with opportunities and choices that are comparable to those available to students without disability.
An adjustment is reasonable if it:
- supports a student with disability to participate in education on the same basis as other students
- takes into account the student’s learning needs
- balances the interests, including safety, of all parties, such as the student with disability, staff members and other students.
If you would like to learn more about reasonable adjustments for your child, please make a time to see me in the Inclusive Education Centre.

Year 3-6 Curriculum News from the Head of Deparment

We are well into Term 2, and students have begun their assessments. It is crucial for students to attend school regularly to ensure they can complete their assessments successfully. Please make sure to check with your child's teacher for the assessment dates or refer to the year level curriculum overview that was sent out in Week 3.
The first block of swimming lessons has concluded, and we're pleased to report that it was a great success. Many students attended and enjoyed the lessons. For information about the second block of swimming, please refer to the swimming timetable.
In terms of curriculum, our teachers are currently undergoing a familiarization stage with the revised version of the Australian Curriculum for Mathematics and English. These revisions will be implemented next year, aiming to create a contemporary and refined curriculum that provides improved clarity for teachers and aligns with international benchmarks.

Semester One report cards will be emailed on Thursday, June 22, 2023, to the email address provided to the school upon your child’s enrolment. If there have been any changes to your contact information, please contact the administration office to have it updated.

Premier’s Reading Challenge
Let’s get reading! We are participating in the Premier’s reading challenge. I’d love to see some photos of students reading and/or the stack of books they’ve read so far to create a display board in the library showcasing our avid readers!
Email any photos to rblac92@eq.edu.au

National Simultaneous Storytime
National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its 23nd successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6.
Trinity Beach State School is participating in this event on Wednesday 24th May. The book for this year is “The Speedy Sloth” written by Rebecca Young and illustrated by Heath McKenzie. Rumour has it that a “Speedy Sloth” may be visiting classes to read the book. Copies of the book will be available to borrow from the library after the event.

Guidance Officer News

For those parents and families who don’t know me yet, my name is Jenny Ferguson and my office is in the Library. I work at Trinity Beach State School every day, and can provide support or referrals for support to families who need assistance.
I can usually be easily recognised by my bright pink hair! Your kids will have seen me around the school, even if they have not met me yet.
I have had a lot of queries from parents recently about how to assist their child to deal with anxiety. It seems that this is a common issue for a growing number of children in our school, and across Australia.
If you are concerned about your child showing signs of anxiety, here are some things you can do:
- Talk with your child and see if there is something they are worried about. Sometimes it can be something very specific, and if that is changed, their anxiety / worries reduce very quickly.
- Talk with your child’s teacher to let them know you are seeing some signs that your child may be anxious / worried. This will help you to identify whether your child’s concerns are just being shown at home, or also on display at school.
- Talk to your GP about your concerns – doctors have excellent training in recognising and helping to treat mental health issues. Anxiety is very common in children and most GPs are wonderful at suggesting some ways to assist.
- Talk to the Deputy Principal or myself (Guidance Officer) to share your worries. We can help to keep an eye on your child, and offer them additional support, if it is needed.
There are also some amazing websites with more information on anxiety. Here a few to consider:
https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/anxiety-in-children
https://healthyfamilies.beyondblue.org.au/age-6-12/mental-health-conditions-in-children/anxiety
https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/health/conditionsandtreatments/fear-and-anxiety-children
If you have significant concerns about your child, you’re best to start with a GP referral. If you need a hand to organise this, I’m happy to assist. I can be contacted on jferg53@eq.edu.au or via my office phone which is 4057 1421.
PBL - Positive Behaviour for Learning is our Whole School Approach for behaviour
Please continue to discuss our schools Focus Skills with your children at home. These skills play an integral part in our Positive Behaviour for Learning Program (PBL) and referring to these at home will help strengthen the connection between home and school around the expectations of our learners. Each week we focus on a new skill, keep an eye out on our FB page for what our Focus Skill is for the week.

Can you help? We would love your support to assist with garden projects in our school. Please see the Principal if you have a green thumb or would like to support our school and the students. Even 30 minutes a term would be valued.

Just like our students, the gardens are in full bloom outside of Mrs SRs Year 3 classroom thanks to these dedicated green thumbs…

Turning the dial on Emotional Intelligence
In today's fast-paced and competitive world, emotional intelligence (EI) has become a critical factor in determining the success of schools and their staff.
Today psychologists Phil Slade and Rochelle Weir were invited to our school by our Principal Mr Hollis to engage in research based learning and practical ideas to support students with emotional intelligence and regulation.
We are now a little more informed about the functions of the…
Prefrontal Cortex (PFC)
Hippocampus &
Amygdala…
and how we can support learners at our school.

BYOx Classes
Our BYOx Laptop pilot classes in Year 5 & 6 using QLearn platforms have been a huge success thanks to our dedicated teachers, students and families.
As a result of this we are currently consulting with our staff who are excited to expand our ‘Laptops for Learners’ initiative further. Stay online for more info…
