Year 2 - Term 3 Curriculum Overview 2023
Term 3
Welcome back to Term 3. Year 2 has a busy term ahead with 2 incursions to consolidate our learning in class. The first incursion is Roaming Wild. The students will be able to see some live animals and learn about life cycles and classifications. The second incursion is the History Trailer. The students get to see and touch many items from the “past” and talk about life from long ago.
English
Information Report
This term students are exploring the language features of information reports. They will plan and write an animal report on an Australian animal. This unit links very closely with the Science unit. Students will be assessed on the structure of the text, use of scientific language, sentence structure and punctuation (capital letters, full stops and commas in a list)
Maths
This term students will represent multiplication and division, use multiplication to solve problems and count large collections. Students will divide shapes and collections into halves, quarters and eighths and solve simple fraction problems. They will describe one-step transformations, including turns, flips and slides, and identify in real-world situations and compare and order objects, measure length, area and capacity using informal units.
Science
Watch it grow
All living things have their own life story, but all species share in the same cycle of growth, change, reproduction and death. Understanding more about the life cycles of various species can help us in many ways. It might help us to protect and preserve endangered species, to manage and control unwanted species like insect pests, or to improve animal husbandry.
The Watch it Grow unit is an ideal way to link science with literacy in the classroom. It provides opportunities for students to explore the growth of a range of living things and explore the processes of growth and change, of reproduction and death that apply to all animals. Through hands-on activities and investigations, students compare the growth of living things under different conditions.
HASS
In this unit, students will explore the following inquiry question:
How have changes in technology shaped our daily life?
Learning opportunities support students to:
- investigate continuity and change in technology used in the home, e.g. in toys or household products
- compare and contrast features of objects from the past and present
- sequence key developments in the use of a particular object in daily life over time
- pose questions about objects from the past and present
- describe ways technology has impacted on peoples' lives making them different from those of previous generations
- use information gathered for an investigation to develop a narrative about the past
HPE
2A & 2B students will demonstrate fundamental movement skills of rolling, balancing and jumping. They will perform gymnastic skills as a continuous movement sequence that incorporates the elements of movement: body awareness, effort (flow) and space awareness. In Health, students will explore what shapes their own, their family and classroom's identity. They will examine strengths and achievements in individual and groups and ways to include others to make them feel they belong. Students will explore the importance of celebrating who they are and respecting each other's differences.
2C, 2D & 2E students will be learning and performing long-rope skipping sequences to rhymes. This will help them develop fitness and co-ordination, along with team co-operation skills. They will consider the effects of skipping on their bodies, particularly in relation to their heart rate.. These classes will be doing Health and Gymnastics in Term 4.
Music
During Term 3, students will reinforce knowledge of the rhythmic elements – crotchet, quavers and minim. They will learn about strong and weak beats, rhythmic ostinato and percussion instruments
Drama
In Term 3 students explore the legend of The Pied Piper of Hamelin and consider how the parents of the missing children would have felt (empathy). They make choices about the roles of the Pied Piper, the Mayor and the parents of the missing children as they participate in a process drama. The students explore ideas and solutions by participating in the developing drama and, while in role, share these with others.
Visual Arts
This term in Visual Arts, Year 2 students will be exposed to each of the seven basic elements of art. Elements of art are stylistic features that are included in artwork to help the artist communicate. These elements are line, shape, colour, texture, value space and form. Students view various famous artworks that have each element depicted in the artwork. Students will use and experiment with different materials, techniques, technologies and processes to make artworks using the basic elements of art.
Technology
In this unit, students will explore the characteristics and properties of materials and components that are used to produce designed solutions. They will design and make a spinning toy.

Social Emotional Learning/Self-Regulation

The Pause Program will commence in week 6 of this term. Why the Pause approach?
- Pause teaches students the importance of recognising the signals in their body that their brain sends them.
- Pause teaches students the three key parts of the brain that are responsible for thinking, emotions and long term memory.
- Pause empowers students to self-regulate their own behaviour by taking notice and acting on the signals they receive from their brain in a positive way.
- Wellbeiing underpins the way children feel about themselves and how they relate to others.
- Pause improves children’s wellbeing by teaching them about Neuroscience and Mindfulness.
Reading & Spelling
Our school continues to embed a whole school approach to reading and spelling across Prep to Year 6. This involves teaching the reading and spelling demands of the Australian Curriculum, providing students with a systematic synthetic phonics approach and unpacking the Big 6/Science of Reading through engaging and meaningful lessons. Students engage with decodable texts when learning to read and rich authentic texts when reading to learn and continue to use the PLD approach for their spelling and sound focus
