Year 3 - Term 3 Curriculum Overview 2023
Term 3
We hope you all had a safe and happy holiday and look forward to a very productive and successful 10 week term, ending Friday, 15th September. September, 01st is a Staff Development Day and a Pupil Free Day.
Our Year 3 teaching team consists of 3A Mrs Alison Simpson-Taylor, 3B Ms Christina Stanfield Roche, 3C Mr Chris Clair who is on leave and Mrs McPherson will be covering this class, 3D Mr Jacob Neill, 3E Ms Kate Archer, 3F Mrs Timena Rhodes (Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri) and Mrs Ariel Ballou (Wed). Mrs Ariel Ballou and Mrs Jude Doherty work in our IEC Unit and provide support to students.
Our Maths, Science, English and HASS programs are aligned to the Australian Curriculum for Year 3. We have specialist classes provided by our specialist teachers, these are Music, HPE, Technology, Drama and The Arts. Classes will rotate between Drama, The Arts and Technology, however, Music and HPE are taught each term.
In English students will be exploring Poetry and writing a Senses Poem. There will be a culminating excursion to support students to write their Senses Poem about the beach environment. To help support their creative writing we will take each Year 3 class for a morning walk to Trinity Beach which will include them writing their Senses Poem planner and a picnic lunch.
Week 6- Yr 3 Beach Excursion Dates
- Wednesday 16th August-3E, 3C and Yr3 students from 3/4A
- Thursday 17th August- 3A and 3B
- Friday 18th August – 3D and 3F
English
Students listen to, read, view and adapt Australian poems. They analyse texts by exploring the context, purpose and audience and how language features and language devices can be adapted to create new meaning. Students write and present to a familiar audience, an adaptation of a poem, using appropriate speaking skills. Students read a rhyming text and explore ways in which the language features and devices can be highlighted in performance through the use of pace, pitch, tone, volume and gesture.
Maths
In this unit students apply a variety of mathematical concepts in real-life, lifelike and purely mathematical situations:
- Number and place value – Students classify numbers as either odd or even, continue number patterns, recall addition facts for single-digit numbers and recognise the connection between addition and subtraction.
- Units of measurement - order, compare and measure objects using metric units, explain measurement choices, measure length, represent and tell time to the minute on digital and analogue clocks and transfer knowledge of time to real-life contexts.
- Interpreting grid maps, and identifying symmetry, three-dimensional objects and angles - Students match positions on maps with given information, and identify symmetry in the environment. Students make a model of a three-dimensional object and recognise angles in real situations.
Science
Every day we see or use things that have been melted or frozen, heated or cooled. All around us
are items that we find both useful and attractive that have been moulded into different shapes
using heating and cooling. These can range from cast iron frying pans and plastic rubbish bins
to chocolate bilbies. Understanding the properties of materials and how they change state
under different conditions can help materials scientists to develop even more extraordinary
products to help improve our quality of life.
The Melting moments unit is an ideal way to link science with literacy in the classroom. While
exploring how solids or liquids are influenced by temperature, students experience the way
items from their everyday lives can change. Through hands-on investigations, students investigate how the size of the pieces affects the melting time of chocolate.
HASS
In HASS this Semester students will work to find out the answer to the following inquiry questions:
- How and why are places similar and different?
- How do people contribute to their communities, past and present?
Diverse communities and places and the contribution people make
The Year 3 curriculum focuses on the diversity of people and places in their local community and beyond, and how people participate in their communities. Students study how places are represented geographically and how communities express themselves culturally and through civic participation. Opportunities are provided to learn about diversity within their community, including the Country/Place of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, and about other communities in Australia and neighbouring countries. Students compare the climates, settlement patterns and population characteristics of places, and how these affect communities, past and present. Students examine how individuals and groups celebrate and contribute to communities in the past and present, through establishing and following rules, decision-making, participation and commemoration.
HPE
In PE, students in Year 3 will perform specialised tennis skills and combine movement concepts and strategies during games. Students will also demonstrate fair play and skills to work collaboratively during tennis activities and games. In Health, students investigate the concepts of physical activity and sedentary behaviours while exploring the recommendations of physical activity for five to twelve year olds. They will examine the benefits of physical activity and investigate ways to increase physical activity in their lives.
Music
During Term 3, students will reinforce knowledge of known rhythmic elements. They will study pentatonic scale, dynamics and string instruments. Students also will learn a few songs and play games, which will help to develop improvisation and creativity in the students.
Drama
This term students will develop improvisations based on sport and fitness activities.
They will sustain and build belief in roles and use drama elements to create theatre conventions like freeze frames and slow motion. Students will explore gestures and postures and how they relate to and reveal character.
Visual Arts
This term in Visual Arts, Year 3 students will be exposed to each of the seven basic elements of art. Elements of art are stylistic features that are included in artwork to help the artist communicate. These elements are line, shape, colour, texture, value space and form. Students view various famous artworks that have each element depicted in the artwork. Students will use and experiment with different materials, techniques, technologies and processes to make artworks using the basic elements of art.
Technology
In Technologies, students in Year 3 will apply their knowledge of heat transfer to plan and create an insulator for a water bottle. Students collect data throughout the investigation, presenting results as a multimodal presentation.

Social Emotional Learning/Self-Regulation

The Pause Program will commence in week 6 of this term. Why the Pause approach?
- Pause teaches students the importance of recognising the signals in their body that their brain sends them.
- Pause teaches students the three key parts of the brain that are responsible for thinking, emotions and long term memory.
- Pause empowers students to self-regulate their own behaviour by taking notice and acting on the signals they receive from their brain in a positive way.
- Wellbeiing underpins the way children feel about themselves and how they relate to others.
- Pause improves children’s wellbeing by teaching them about Neuroscience and Mindfulness.
Reading & Spelling
Our school continues to embed a whole school approach to reading and spelling across Prep to Year 6. This involves teaching the reading and spelling demands of the Australian Curriculum, providing students with a systematic synthetic phonics approach and unpacking the Big 6/Science of Reading through engaging and meaningful lessons. Students engage with decodable texts when learning to read and rich authentic texts when reading to learn and continue to use the PLD approach for their spelling and sound focus.
Homework
At Trinity Beach State School, regular Home Reading is a priority. Please read with them during the week. Children will be encouraged to borrow books from our Library for enjoyment and relaxation.

QParents
QP is an online portal helping the school move toward a cashless and paper friendly school.
- The QP portal allows Parents and Carers to grant participation consent online for activities such as swimming and excursions which reduces our need to print out paper consent forms
- Also, the QP portal enables Parents and Carers to make payment online for school activities and viewing unpaid invoices payment history.
Thank you to all those parents who have registered for QParents. This means every registered parent now has the opportunity to access to their children’s student records at their fingertips, anytime, anywhere. Haven’t received an invitation from us yet? There’s still time! Please let us know immediately. Or if you are simply looking for further information, videos and FAQs on QParents, visit https://qparents.qld.edu.au

Tuckshop
Tuckshop operates daily during the two breaks. Orders can be placed online via FlexiSchools or at the tuckshop on a paper bag. Tuckshop orders are placed in class tuckshop basket before 9am. Miscellaneous items can be purchased over the counter. Please talk to your child about not giving money away or sharing food.
