Year 5/6A - Term 3 Curriculum Overview 2023
Term 3
Welcome to Term 3 and the 2nd Semester! The students have launched straight back in to learning and come back re-energised and ready to have a go at everything! Attendance is crucial to students being able to create momentum with their learning, please reach out if you need support in relation to engagement at school. Having the correct tools is also crucial, over half our class have ‘lost’ their rulers! Please talk to your child about what resources they need to re-stock. Please check with your child regularly that they have everything they need for school, particularly consumables and easily misplaced items such as pencils, erasers, glue, rulers etc. These often need replacing each term.
Year 6’s have their Reef trip on Thursday August 24th. Information and forms for the reef trip have been sent home, it is also available on the QParent app. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion, the Queensland Government, through the Great Barrier Reef Education Experience Program, will provide a subsidy to the school of $40.00 per student who attends the excursion.
The assessment schedule for Term 3 is included in this outline (see table below), this provides a good insight into what your child is working on in class and their assessment task. If you have any questions regarding this, please contact me via email sadev0@eq.edu.au .
English
Students will read, view and listen to a variety of non-fiction, informative texts and digital news segments. They will understand how language and text features can be combined to share information clearly and with purpose. They demonstrate their understanding of informative texts’ features through the creation of their own digital news segment where they will report on a natural disaster (year 6s) or a space phenomenon (Year 5s) using knowledge and research gained in their respective science unit. Students’ news report videos will be played to the class and students will answer questions about their report.
Maths
This term, students will cover two separate units. The Number and Algebra focus is on finding unknown quantities and creating patterns with decimals and fractions (Year 5) & order of operations and creating patterns with decimals and fractions (Year 6). This unit provides multiple opportunities for students to perform calculations with whole numbers, decimals, fractions and the 4 operations, revising their skills using inverse operations and powers of 10. They will solve problems using the order of operations, including multiplication and division problems with both mental and written methods. Our second unit will focus on Measurement; with particular focus on measuring and converting between the units of measurement for length, perimeter, area, mass, volume, and capacity
Science
Term 3 has a split unit for our 5s and 6s. The Curriculum area is ‘Earth and Space Sciences’, with each year level focusing on a separate area. The year 5s are exploring space and what is in our solar system. The year 6’s are exploring natural disasters and the impact these events have on the Earth’s surface. Both Year 5 and 6 students will consider human impacts and how scientific knowledge can be used to inform personal and community decisions.
HASS
Students will demonstrate an understanding of the diversity of places by representing and interpreting data and information in a variety of forms. They will compare the similarities and differences between Australia and Asia (Year 6) or two different locations in Australia (Year 5). They will plot on a map the absolute location of capital cities and will describe and compare human and natural characteristics of Australia and Asia. They will create maps to show the interconnections between places countries and describe these relationships. Students will compare and contrast trends in migration over time.
HPE
In PE, students in year 5/6 will be involved in a unit on Basketball. Through modified games and activities, students will learn the rules of the game, fundamental skills such as passing, dribbling and shooting and game play strategies. In Health, students will recognise that emotions and behaviours influence how people interact. They will understand that relationships are established and maintained by applying skills.
Visual Arts
This term in Visual Arts, students in 5/6A will be exposed to each of the seven basic elements of art. Elements of art are stylistic features that are included in artwork to help the artist communicate. These elements are line, shape, colour, texture, value space and form. Students view various famous artworks that have each element depicted in the artwork. Students will use and experiment with different materials, techniques, technologies and processes to make artworks using the basic elements of art.
Technology
In this unit students will explore how competing factors and technologies influence the design of a sustainable service which provides a plant for the preparation of a healthy food product.
The service will involve the design of the plant’s:
- packaging
- fact sheet.
- Investigating
- Generating and producing designs
- Evaluating design solutions
